Part 1: How to Hear God - The Foundation of Prophetic Hearing

God's voice is a gift of love, freely given to you. Rest in that truth, and you will hear Him.

Hearing the voice of God is one of the most transformative experiences we can have as believers. May God bless you richly as we delve into this crucial topic and discover how we can position ourselves to hear His voice more clearly and consistently.

Many people struggle with hearing God because they approach the prophetic realm from a place of assumption, without a clear understanding or personal experience. However, hearing God’s voice isn’t limited to a select few; it’s a gift given to every believer. By God’s grace, I have walked in the realm of hearing His voice, and while I’ve made mistakes, He has faithfully refined and perfected this gift in me over time.

You, too, can hear God’s voice.

This is the truth every child of God—every believer who has surrendered their life to Jesus—needs to know. One common mistake in prophetic teachings is the idea that you must earn the ability to hear from God. Some suggest that if you live a certain way or engage in lengthy prayers, you will hear Him. While spiritual discipline is important, hearing God’s voice is not something we can earn through our efforts. It is entirely by the grace and love of God that we are able to hear Him.

Ephesians 2:8-9 reminds us, "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast." In the same way that our salvation is a gift of grace, so is our ability to hear His voice. It’s not something we can achieve through good works; it’s a demonstration of God’s deep desire to communicate with His children.

God desires to speak with all His children.

In the story of Cain and Abel, even after Cain’s offering was rejected, God still spoke to him. He didn’t abandon Cain but explained why his offering wasn’t accepted (Genesis 4:6-7). This reveals God’s heart to guide us, even in our mistakes. Like a loving parent, He communicates to correct and lead us.

Pharaoh, who didn’t know or follow God, also received divine warnings and insights (Genesis 12:17-19). If God is willing to speak to an unbeliever, how much more to His children who have been filled with His Spirit? This reassures us that God is always speaking to us, not based on how well we perform, but because He loves us.

Hearing God’s voice is an act of grace, and it begins with recognizing God as our Father who delights in guiding His children. There is nothing you can do to make Him stop speaking to you. It’s not based on performance but on the love and mercy He has for you.

Position yourself to hear God.

Understanding that hearing God is a gift of grace frees us from striving and teaches us to position ourselves with a heart of humility and openness. Psalm 46:10 reminds us, "Be still, and know that I am God." It is in stillness, in resting in His grace, that we begin to hear His voice more clearly.

When we recognize that God’s desire is to speak to us, we approach Him with faith and confidence, knowing that He is our loving Father. As Jesus said, "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me" (John 10:27). God’s voice is always accessible to those who belong to Him.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your grace and love that allows us to hear Your voice. Help us to rest in Your mercy, knowing that we don’t have to earn the right to hear You. Open our ears and hearts to recognize Your voice in our daily lives. Teach us to be still before You, to trust in Your desire to speak to us, and to walk in the confidence of being Your beloved children. In Jesus' name, Amen.
