Pantone has released its much awaited color of the year for 2023, Viva Magenta, a bright hue of pink.
According to Pantone, the hue is all about cheerful celebration, innovation, and unrestricted self-expression.
“As virtual worlds become a more significant part of our everyday lives, we strive to take inspiration from nature and what is genuine,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, in a statement. “PANTONE 18–1750 Viva Magenta is derived from the red family and is inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most valuable dyes belonging to the natural dye family as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known.”
“PANTONE 18–1750 Viva Magenta, rooted in the primeval, reconnects us to primal substance,” she continued. “By invoking natural forces, it galvanizes our soul, assisting us in developing inner power.”
The opening, which took place on Thursday at Artechouse in Miami Beach, also provided the first peek into the exhibition “Magentaverse.” The venue for technology-driven interactive art has created an immersive experience honouring the Pantone color of the year for the fourth year.
The exhibition is intended to be “an experience that highlights the color’s remarkable sense of liveliness and energy,” according to Tati Pastukhova, co-founder and executive director of Artechouse. “In order to fully utilize all of its capabilities, we had to consider sight, sound, and touch.”
The finished product is an animated LED tunnel that blends magenta-hued pictures obtained by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope and other outer-space photographs from the space agency’s archives. The exhibit converts images into sound using a sonification technology developed by NASA.
Other high-tech features include a LIDAR sensor that people exploring the area will activate, prompting real-time data visualization. Pantone used the A.I. generative program Midjourney to develop the first set of pictures to depict the hue.
In addition to the exhibition, Pantone is also introducing a line of products that incorporate the Viva Magenta hue. This includes fashion and home décor items, as well as stationery, gifts, and office supplies. Brands such as Kate Spade, Crate & Barrel, and Papyrus will be among the first to feature the new shade in their collections.
Pantone has a long history of selecting the color of the year, dating back to the year 2000. Each year, the Pantone Color Institute analyzes global trends in art, film, fashion, and design to select a hue that embodies the current cultural mood. In recent years, we have seen a range of colors chosen, from soft pastels to deep, moody shades.
The choice of Viva Magenta as the color of the year for 2023 is being widely celebrated by the creative community. Many designers and artists see the bright and energetic hue as a symbol of hope and a new beginning after a challenging year. They believe that the color will inspire new ideas and encourage people to be more daring and bold in their creative pursuits.
In conclusion, the release of Viva Magenta as the color of the year for 2023 is a welcome and exciting development for the creative world. It is a reminder of the power of color to connect people and inspire new ideas. With its bright, joyful energy, Viva Magenta is sure to be a staple in design, fashion, and art for the coming year.
