1. Explain what 'paralinguistics' is.

Paralinguistics encompasses the nonverbal aspects of spoken communication, which play a crucial role in conveying meaning and intent. This field includes various elements such as body language, gestures, facial expressions, mime, as well as voice tone and pitch. Understanding these components is essential for effective communication in both personal and professional contexts.

2. Why do you think body language is important for students?

Effective body language is essential in the educational environment, as it significantly influences student responses. It is often interpreted at face value, highlighting its importance in communication. In the classroom, understanding and utilizing body language can enhance the learning experience for all participants.

3. Name 5 essential practical body language tips - explain them.

1) Be at the door when your learners arrived: Welcoming students at the entrance sets a positive tone for the class while establishing authority from the outset.

2) Project your voice: Ensure that your voice is loud and clear so that all students, regardless of their seating position, can hear and understand you.

3) Try and avoid standing behind your table for lengthy periods: Avoid remaining behind your desk for extended periods. Instead, circulate throughout the classroom to engage with all students and foster a more interactive learning environment.

4) Always use the whole classroom: Make a conscious effort to use the entire classroom space. This approach helps all students feel included and contributes to maintaining their attention.

5) Get close to misbehaving students: In cases of misbehavior, approach the student calmly and position yourself closer to them. This strategy can help manage the situation effectively without requiring an increase in vocal authority.

4. Dress is a very important aspect of teaching. Why do you think you should dress well? This is a very important question as many teachers don't adhere to it.

Dressing well in the classroom is crucial for teachers. Your appearance sets the tone and establishes authority, showing students that you take your role seriously. Professional attire conveys respect for yourself and your students, indicating your commitment to a positive learning environment. As role models, teachers demonstrate the importance of presentation. Dressing appropriately influences how students perceive professionalism in various settings. When you look good, you often feel more confident, which can enhance your teaching and classroom management. Overall, a teacher's appearance can affect the classroom mood. By dressing well, you create a positive and productive atmosphere that motivates students to focus and engage.

5. What do gestures and mimes promote?

Gestures and mime promote interest and encourage engagement and participation.

6. Name and explain two gestures and explain them. Add your thoughts. If you can think of any new examples add them in.

• Encouraging a response from the student group. Encouraging students to respond means creating a space where they feel safe, motivated, and confident to share their ideas. When teachers promote student responses, it engages students in learning, boosts their confidence, and fosters a positive team spirit in the classroom. To encourage more participation and help students connect with the material, teachers can use simple methods like asking open-ended questions, giving think time, and offering positive feedback.

• Instructions. Using gestures in the classroom can help teachers communicate better with students. Gestures make verbal instructions clearer, reinforce the message, and engage students more. Hand motions, facial expressions, and body movements can help students focus, understand the lesson, and feel actively involved. Gestures are especially helpful for clarifying points, guiding activities, or managing the class flow without interrupting the lesson.

7. When writing on the whiteboard-what should you always do?

• Arrange your board carefully.

• Don't use joined-up writing in the beginner/elementary classes.

• Do not hide the board

• Writing on the board always takes longer than you think it will.

• Talk as you write

• Don't write up too much information

• Where resources permit, use colors to emphasize.

• An effective way of showing different forms of a structure together is to draw a table.

• Simple drawings can help to increase the interest in a lesson and are often an effective way of showing meaning and conveying situations to the class.

• The board is your most crucial classroom tool.

• The board is almost always available, there are no technical issues that can plague other teaching aids, and it can be used for various purposes without special preparation.

• Most importantly. effective use of the board can make both the introduction and practice of learning items more engaging and clearer for learners.

8. How can drawing images on the board help with the students learning?

Simple drawings can help to increase the interest in a lesson and are often an effective way of showing meaning and conveying situations to the class.

9. Round up-how can the white board be effective in the classroom-think about all the different ways it can be used.

The whiteboard is a very useful tool in the classroom. It works well because it can be used for many purposes, like teaching, engaging students, and managing the classroom. The whiteboard is effective because it is flexible, interactive, and visual. It supports different teaching methods and learning styles. Here are some ways to use the whiteboard effectively: Delivering Lessons: Use it to explain concepts clearly. Encouraging Student Participation: Invite students to share their ideas and take part in discussions. Organizing Information: Structure lessons and make information easy to understand. Supporting Different Learning Styles: Help visual, auditory, and hands-on learners through various activities on the board. Promoting Flexibility and Adaptability: Adjust lessons quickly based on student needs. Reinforcing Memory and Focus: Highlight key points to help students remember and stay attentive. Facilitating Classroom Management: Use it to display rules, schedules, and important reminders for a well-organized classroom. Overall, the whiteboard makes lessons more dynamic and effective for all students.

10. What is concept checking? Why is it important?

Concept checking helps teachers ensure that students understand a concept before moving on in the lesson. This strategy includes asking clear questions or using activities to check comprehension, instead of assuming students understand just because they are quiet or say “yes.” Concept checking is important for effective teaching. It helps clear up misunderstandings and encourages a more interactive and engaging learning environment. This method is key to building a strong foundation before tackling more difficult topics.

11. What is eliciting?

Eliciting is a technique which enables you to get learners to provide information, rather than always giving them the information. It is use at the start of the lesson to encourage learners to suggest vocabulary and language forms, and to brainstorm a topic at the beginning of a skills lesson.

12. Name four advantages of eliciting.

1) It keeps the student alert.

2) The learners are actively involved, and this has a motivating effect.

3) It gives you a chance to diagnose where the weaknesses of the learners lie and then to take corrective action immediately.

4) It saves you giving unwieldly explanations. This enables you to relax and enjoy the lesson more.

13. What are concept questions? Please describe.

Concept questions assess a learner's understanding of specific concepts, especially in language teaching. They ensure that students grasp the meaning, usage, and application of what they have learned, moving beyond simple memorization. Typically used after introducing new information, vocabulary, or grammar, these questions reinforce comprehension and enable students to apply their knowledge effectively. Key characteristics of concept questions include Clarification: They clarify understanding. Simplified Language: They use clear and simple wording. Targeted: They focus on specific concepts. Yes/No or Open-Ended: They can be framed as yes/no or open-ended questions and Contextual Understanding: They emphasize applying knowledge in context.

14. Please give some examples of question-and-answer work in class.

• Open-Ended Questions: "What do you think will happen next in the story? Why?"

• True or False Questions: "True or false: Photosynthesis occurs in the roots of plants."

• Multiple-Choice Questions: "Which of these is an example of a mammal?

o Shark

o Eagle

o Dolphin

o Frog"

• Yes/No or Binary Questions: "Is this sentence in the past tense?"

• Problem-Solving Questions: "If you were in this character's position, what would you do differently?"

• Review or Recall Questions: "Who wrote Romeo and Juliet?"

• Prediction Questions: "Based on the title, what do you think this story will be about?"

• Comparative Questions: "Compare modern technology with traditional tools. What are the advantages of each?"

• Reflective Questions: "What was the most challenging part of this activity, and why?"

• Higher-Order Thinking Questions: "Design a plan to solve this environmental problem using the resources we discussed."

• Role-Specific Questions: "As a scientist, how would you approach this experiment?"

• Class Poll Questions: "Which method do you prefer? Option A or Option B?"

15. Why is it good to give feedback in class?

Providing feedback in class is essential for learners as it helps them understand their performance on a learning task, typically with the goal of improvement. Feedback can motivate learners when they are doing well and assist them in recognizing their challenges and how to enhance their performance when they are struggling.

16. Explain the term "Fossilization'.

Fossilization is a crucial concept to consider when discussing language correction. It refers to the phenomenon where a learner's progress in acquiring a second language (L2) stagnates after a period of improvement. This stagnation occurs even with regular exposure to and interaction with the L2, as well as a strong motivation to continue learning. Fossilization is often described as reaching a plateau in language development.

17. Why do you think it is important for regular assessments and testing?

Regular assessment and testing are essential for identifying learners' strengths and gaps. It helps you determine who needs additional instruction and what the next steps should be. You can track the growth in language skills and evaluate what has been taught effectively, as well as what areas require further attention. Additionally, it allows you to identify which language items need to be revisited and to gather evidence that will aid in planning future lessons for the class.

18. What is a summative test?

A summative test is designed to assess specific learning needs and typically takes the form of a quiz, exam, end-of-unit test, or end-of-term test. This evaluation is conducted by the teacher at the conclusion of a designated period to evaluate the level of students' performance and knowledge.

19. Give 3 examples of summative tests that you can use in the ESL Classroom.

1) True/False

2) Gap-filling and completion

3) Matching
