Isra and Miraj

A Timeless Journey Across Realms.

The night journey and ascension.

Truth is not always what we think it to be. It is not always just facts, and it is not always just logic. Facts are realities that can be directly observed and verified — they cannot be denied. Logic is the framework we use to explain those facts. Yet sometimes, our logic fails to explain a fact until our understanding grows. For example, quantum tunneling allows particles to pass through barriers they “shouldn’t” be able to cross according to classical logic — yet it happens.

Over 1,400 years ago, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ journeyed from Makkah to Masjid al-Aqsa and from there to the highest realms, returning in a single night — as experienced by people on Earth. If we look at this from a relativistic perspective, perhaps the higher realm he entered had vastly greater gravitational effects, causing extreme time dilation. In such a case, 1 second there could equal centuries on Earth. From that realm’s clock, the journey could still be ongoing, even as he returned, lived his earthly life, and now resides in Barzakh.

In quantum physics, particles can exist in multiple possible states at once — a phenomenon called superposition. Like a hypothetical rabbit that is both black and white until observed, the states coexist until measurement “collapses” them into one outcome. Likewise, entanglement shows that two particles can be linked so deeply that distance makes no difference to their connection. These concepts, while not literal explanations, offer metaphors for how different realms and timelines could intersect without losing connection — as in the Mi’raj.

As for the angels and souls he met, these belong to realities beyond our three-dimensional realm. Physics can speculate about higher dimensions, but we have no direct access to them. The Mi’raj remains a matter of faith — yet the language of modern physics offers a set of analogies to glimpse how such a journey could transcend our normal concepts of time and space.

We can say that "Buraq," the ride of the Prophet for the journey of Miraj, was as fast as the speed of light, which caused time dilation. It is also said that he traveled through a wormhole cause it is the only thing that can make the distance between two realms so short. Now imagine someone is travelling at the speed of light through a wormhole, which can cause extreme time dilation, according to the theory of relativity, the traveller will stop, and they will experience no aging or time passing if they are travelling at the speed of light.

Our minds are so limited in understanding how the Prophet returned to his home in one night; indeed, it was a miracle of Allah, and we can't give a solid scientific explanation for this incident, as we don't have access to that realm. This incident was completely divine, and science, modern physics, and theoretical physics can't explain it. There are many divine incidents that are mentioned in the Quran, but science didn't agree upon them before, but now science agrees upon them.

Here are some Quranic verses related to this topic:

Surah Al-Isra (17:1):

"Glory be to Him Who took His servant by night from Al-Masjid Al-Haram to Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, so that We might show him some of Our signs. Indeed, He alone is the All-Hearing, All-Seeing."

Surah An-Najm (53:13–18)

"And indeed, he saw him a second time by the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary — near it is the Garden of Refuge — when there covered the Lote Tree that which covered it. The sight did not swerve, nor did it transgress. He certainly saw the greatest signs of his Lord."

Surah Al-Hajj (22:47)

"And they urge you to hasten the punishment. But Allah will never fail in His promise. And indeed, a day with your Lord is like a thousand years of what you count."

Surah As-Sajdah (32:5)

"He arranges [each] matter from the heaven to the earth; then it will ascend to Him in a Day, the measure of which is a thousand years of what you count."

Surah Al-Ma’arij (70:4)

"The angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in a Day, the measure of which is fifty thousand years."

Surah Al-Baqarah (2:3 and 2:4)

"Those who believe in the unseen, establish prayer, and spend out of what We have provided for them. And who believe in what has been revealed to you, and what was revealed before you, and of the Hereafter they are certain [in faith]."

I believe that faith is above everything. Faith is independent; that is why psychologists suggest saying positive affirmations, to spend time manifesting, and neuroscience talks about the power of believing. They are modern sciences, but back then, 1400+ years ago, the Prophet said, "Do not supplicate for yourselves anything but good, for the angels say ‘ʾĀmīn’ to what you say." This hadith is narrated by Abu Salamah in Sahih Muslim. No modern psychology and neuroscience behind his saying just faith that angels say 'Ameen' to whatever we say and neuroscience is explaining it now that how our thoughts, sayings, and believes shape our reality, Allah says: “I am as My servant thinks of Me.”, if we beleive in this and start thinking of Allah that He will grant us everything, forgive us everytime, protect us everywhere, then what can harm you, you are already protected even before asking for protection because of your believe in Allah, Aliyah Umm Raiyan describes it beautifully in her book "Power of Dua" that how to be so certain in you duas that not even a second thought come to you. Science may offer glimpses into possibilities, but faith is the bridge to realities beyond its reach. The Mi’raj was a miracle — timeless, spaceless, and limitless — and belief in it is a reminder that Allah’s power is not bound by our clocks or our logic.
