When you think of hygiene you probably think of the basics; teeth, hair, face. Well that’s all one type of hygiene. Most people, including myself, think that there’s only one type of hygiene and that it’s all the parts of the body but actually there are other types of hygiene. They are hand, respiratory, food, laundry, and body hygiene.

Let’s Review the Basics!

Hand hygiene is central to avoiding spread of infectious diseases in home and everyday life settings, by touching your nose, mouth, eyes, etc. It’s pretty self-explanatory. It means having clean hands. You should wash your hands with soap often and for about 15 seconds or so. You can try singing the “Happy Birthday” song. When you start washing your hands, sing “happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear whatsyourface, happy birthday to you.” If you sing that while you’re washing your hands then you’re fine as long as you do a good job of washing your hands. Washing your hands will make you less likely to get sick or get diseases, so it is important.

Laundry hygiene associates with the practices that restrict or minimize disease and the spreading of disease by soiled clothing and household linens like towels. Items most likely to be contaminated with pathogens are those that come into direct contact with the body. They are underwear, personal towels, and facecloths. Micro-organisms can also be transferred between contaminated and uncontaminated items of clothing and linen during laundering.

Food hygiene is related to the hygiene practices that prevent food poisoning. These are the five key principles.

Avoid contaminating food with pathogens spreading from people, pets, and pests.

Separate raw and cooked foods to prohibit contaminating the cooked foods.

Cook foods for the appropriate amount of time and at the correct temperature to eliminate pathogens.

Store food at the proper temperature.

Use safe water and raw materials.

Respiratory hygiene- Correct respiratory and hand hygiene, when coughing and sneezing, diminish the spread of germs especially during the cold and flu season.

You should:

Carry tissues and use them to catch coughs and sneezes.

Dispose of tissues as soon as possible.

Clean your hands by hand washing or using an alcohol hand sanitizer.

Body hygiene is the big one. It’s the one that has to do with your hair, teeth, skin, face, hands, etc. It’s important to have good body hygiene, especially once you are a teenager. Most elementary school children don’t shower daily, they should but, they don’t need to. However, it becomes essential to shower, brush, and wash your hands often and thoroughly once puberty hits.

You can purchase different products to help you maintain good hygiene. You should obviously get toothbrushes, shampoos, toothpastes, and the other necessities. But you should also buy dental floss, mouthwash, conditioners, deodorants, and antiperspirants.

They can really help because nobody wants to hear that they have bad breath, yellow teeth, plaque, bad odor, dandruff, and other things that make you feel self-conscious.

Don’t feel too bad if anyone says you have any of these things because it’s normal. When you hit puberty, your sweat glands become more active and the chemical make-up of the sweat changes which makes it smell stronger and worse. You should wash your hair daily especially if it’s oily because it can aggravate acne and look greasy.

When you wash your hair, try not to scrub or rub too hard because it can irritate your scalp or damage your hair and it doesn’t help get rid of oil any better.

So as you can see, there are many different types of hygiene. It is very important to have good hygiene. Even though you think you are just doing it for the ladies, it’s something you should do for yourself because it’s important to be healthy.
