How to prepare current affairs for upsc

Current Affairs is a very important section in Civil Services Exam and other exams as many questions are asked from it in almost every section of this exam. It is very important to create a better strategy for the preparation of current affairs section. It is necessary that during the preparation it is important to read and understand the previous year question papers properly so that one can get an idea about the subject of the exam. Along with this, it is equally important to use the right resource and revise it.

Some Tips for Current Affairs preparation :

Limit time : Make sure you limit the time you spend on current affairs so that it doesn’t end up spending all your time studying/practicing other subjects as prescribed by you. Many candidates spends 1 to 2 hours in a day just for current affairs preparation but you should spend maximum 40 minutes for daily current affairs preparation.

Limit the number of newspapers : Read some good national newspapers like The Hindu, The Telegraph or The Indian Express; And read a regional newspaper only for the interview. From magazines you can read magazines like Kurukshetra, Yojna etc.

Know when to pay attention to a part : There are many new stories which are not necessary for UPSC exam. While reading newspaper, highlights the important news stories which is related to UPSC exam syllabus and political news of national and international importance. You should also be aware of scientific advances or newses. Whereas, you can avoid news related to entertainment, personal news accusing each other, fights between political parties etc.

Online sources : Online sources like YouTube videos and websites can help you to gather current affairs materials. A lots of educational YouTube channels provides daily current affairs and you can them for better preparation.

Read Current Affairs Magazine : Manorama Yearbook is a very useful resource for developing general knowledge and improving knowledge of important current affairs. You can follow government publications such as the India Year Book and the Economic Survey. Also you can pick other magazines as per your choice.

Make notes : You can create handwritten notes or e-notes. When you write after reading, it not only helps you to remember and understand the information better, but also makes you aware of the opinion you are forming about the news. Apart from this, it also helps to revise at the last minute if you have prepared and organized everything in the form of notes.

Read the newspaper wisely : Instead of reading each and every news article in depth and amassing their information, you should keep only the basic information which includes the basis of the news and important news stories. And you have to pick authentic newspapers for authentic informations for current affairs preparation.

Books for Current Affairs : Although we not highly suggest you to read any books for current affairs but you can choose some books by searching them online for additional information about current affairs.

Repeat : Like any other subject, this too needs to be repeated; Otherwise the chances of forgetting it and starting from the beginning are very high. Prepare topic-wise notes (eg- Geography, Political, Scientific Progress, Historical) so that you will find it easier to revise.
