My story - I wish I could say I’m rich and famous but I’m not. I’m just like 90% of the population in the world grunting out a living with one exception. In July of 1991, I was diagnosed with the disease, Multiple Sclerosis. I was 33 years old. I’m nobody special, I’ve never done anything spectacular in my life. My MS has had a lot to do with that. I currently live with my wife in Fargo, ND. My son is 21 and a junior in college.

My name is Jon “Scooterjon” Wegner. I got my nickname because I now ride my electric scooter 100% of the time because of MS. My neurologist has told me I have MS lesions or scars on my brain and spinal cord. She also said I have one particular lesion on my spinal cord which is affecting everything below my waist including standing, walking, balance, bladder, bowel plus others.

This coming July 15, 2023, will mark the 32nd anniversary of my MS diagnosis. Looking back, it’s been 32 long years! However, now that I know what I know I can distinctly remember heat troubles and fatigue in my late teens and early 20s. I’m 65 now which means MS has been in my body for at least 40 years.

In my grown life I’ve gained and lost the same 20-30 pounds at least a dozen times. I've been on my yo-yo diet since 1983! That's not a misprint either, it's been almost 40 years. To make matters worse, I'm not getting any younger and my MS makes it harder to exercise.

1. Here are my top 3 weight loss stories. In January of 1983 I was FAT! lol I had one pair of pants I could still squeeze into. The waist was tight when I put them on. I was managing a health club and thought I should look the part of a healthy person. I weighed 210 pounds. Too much beer and pizza, but they sure tasted good going down! I decided to put myself on a diet. I wanted to drop 30 pounds and weigh 180 pounds. I decided to play one hour of racquetball 5 days a week. I would also ride an exercise bike hard for 30 minutes 6 days a week. I didn't eat much during the day and at night I would have just a big salad. I also cut out most of my pizza and beer drinking activities. It took me five months to do it but on June 1, 1983 I weighed in at 180 pounds. I had lost 1.5 pounds per week for 20 weeks. I bought all new clothes and many people would compliment me on my new look.

Over the next 4 years my weight was up and down. On September 1, 1987 though, I started my greatest weight loss achievement. I lost 30 pounds in 30 days. That is correct, 30 in 30! I was 29, single, I didn't have a job and my girlfriend of the past year had just cheated on me. I weighed 210 pounds again and wanted to be 180 again. Here's how I did it.

2. I wouldn't advise anyone to lose weight like this but I had motivation. I decided to eat only 1,200 calories per day. I would get up at 6 am and run 2-3 miles. When I got done running I would do 50-100 sit ups and pushups. Then I'd eat a bowl of cereal or two pieces of toast for my breakfast. Then I watched TV for a couple of hours until noon. Then I'd hop on my ten-speed bicycle and ride around my new city for 20 miles. I had a speedometer on my bike and I'd usually go 20-30 mph. I would bicycle for 1-2 hours. At night I'd run another 1-2 miles. I did the same thing every day for 30 days. On Friday nights I would treat myself to some pizza slices. I figured normal daily activities would burn off my 1,200 calories per day that I ate. Then put all the exercise I was doing on top of that and the weight would fall off. On October 1, 1987 I was 180 pounds.

3. When MS took my standing and walking in 2011 I really started packing on the pounds. I had started riding my scooter 100% of the time. I didn’t have a scale to weigh myself and I had nowhere else to weigh myself sitting down. In 2011, I weighed 195. When I finally stepped on a scale in 2018, I was 250 pounds! I almost had a heart attack! lol I'd never been that heavy. You see, I’ve always weighed between 180-190 pounds. I've played sports my whole life which kept me in shape. In the '80s I managed health clubs in Southern Minnesota, so exercising was easy to get and do. Then in the '90s, I owned a carpet cleaning business in Minneapolis, MN which helped me to stay slim. My favorite foods at the time were pizza, fast-food cheeseburgers, French fries, cookies and wash them down with 2 or 3 beers.

The first thing I did when I was 250 pounds was to start counting calories. One pound is 3,200 calories. To lose a pound a person has to cut out 3,200 calories from their eating or burn off 3,200 with exercise. I didn't exercise much so I kept post-it notes on my kitchen table and I wrote down every calorie I ate for TWO years. I ended up dropping 20 pounds doing it this way but it wasn't much fun and a pain in the rear writing everything down. After my counting, I was down to 230. Unfortunately, I fell back into my old eating habits. I gained the 20 pounds back I had lost counting calories for two years so I was back to 250 pounds again!.

When 2022 rolled around I started looking on the internet for a weight loss plan. It was about this time that I found the Ultimate Keto Meal Plan. Following the keto meal plan and riding my NuStep exercise bicycle I was able to lose 20 pounds and get back to 230 pounds. Most importantly, the Keto Meal Plan has helped me get my weight under control and I'm eating better. I still have 30 pounds to go to get to 200 but I'll get there!
