Honorary Degrees aren’t a Flex Degrees

Honorary Degrees aren’t a flex and here’s why

By Gladys W. MuturiPublished 2 months ago 4 min read

Unlike other College Degrees that aren't a flex due to the terrible job market, there are honorary degrees where all these celebrities or public figures get a honorary degree whether they get an honorary degrees for an academic credential or just an award to honor the celebrity for their achievement.

Recently, reality stars Yung Joc, Towanda Braxton, and Cynthia Bailey had receieved their honorary degrees by Leaders Esteem Christian Bible University in Texas. This recognition celebrates their significant contributions to culture, community, and humanitarian efforts beyond their careers in entertainment. Grammy nominated Yung Joc was honored for his contributions to music and community upliftment. Real Housewives of ATL star Bailey received an honorary doctorate in Humanitarianism for her work in empowering women. Braxton, sister of the Braxton family and reality star, honored for her impact on entertainment and her philanthropic efforts.

A twitter user named Raymonte posted about these celebs getting honorary degrees:

"Honorary degrees irritate me. No celebrity, in my opinion, deserves one. College is demanding, requires a lot of sacrifice and commitment, and can be expensive for some. College kids aren't receiving Grammys or Emmys so why do actors and musicians receive degrees?!?

Now this isn't a bitter post about these celebs getting honorary degrees. These aren't the only celebrities that has honorary degrees. Singer and Actor Tyrese Gibson received an honorary degree from the same university. Also, there are other celebs that had received honorary degrees. Oprah Winfrey received multiple honorary doctorates for media and philanthropy. Taylor Swift received honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from NYU. Denzel Washington received honorary doctorates for acting and activism, and Maya Angelou received over 50 honorary degrees for literature and civil rights work. An honorary degree is one of the most visible ways a university can recognize an individual’s cultural, social, or philanthropic influence. However, despite its ceremonial grandeur, an honorary degree is not an academic degree in the traditional sense. It does not require coursework, examinations, research, or time spent in academic study, which are the foundation of legitimate degrees. Universities hand them out every graduation season: honorary doctorates presented to celebrities, philanthropists, activists, and cultural leaders. Yet despite the shine and ceremony, experts and academic institutions stress that these awards do not carry the weight of a real academic degree.

Academics say the misunderstanding is common. When a university awards an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts to a pop star or a Doctor of Humane Letters to a philanthropist, the public often assumes it’s equivalent to a PhD or professional doctorate. But institutions are clear: it’s recognition, not certification.

Honorary degrees hold prestige, yes but as symbols, not credentials. And that is why they are not considered “flex degrees.” They celebrate accomplishments, not academic expertise, keeping them firmly in the category of award rather than achievement.Of course, honorary degrees are not recognized by employers, as they do not have the same stature as a corresponding earned doctorate degree. It is not meant to be on resumes and it doesn't give a professional name like "Dr." or "PhD".

Also, about the University where Joc, Bailey, Gibson, and Braxton garnered their honorary degrees. I am not sure if it is a real university because if you look at the website:

lecbu.net

Last time that I checked, universities have an ".edu" url not ".net"

So I guess it is not considered a real university like Howard or any other public or private university. Also, I have doubts if they deserved their so-called degree because I found another website with the same university but this site is like

so they paid them to get an honorary degree.

This university also wouldn't let me check the admissions, academics, or any thing on the website. The funny part is the sites mission and statements on the another website:
