Robert Clive (1725–74)

Robert Clive was born on 29 September 1725 in a country named Shropshire in the city of Styche. During his early life he was not the best child and also didn’t have the best childhood. He had 12 siblings, 7 sisters and 5 brothers, from which 6 died in infancy. Robert’s father was Richard Clive, who worked as a lawyer and also had a post in the Parliament for many years. His mother’s name was Rebecca Gaskell, who was a housewife.

Robert’s father was known for having a bad temper all the time, that trait of his was also inherited by Robert. Since Robert was a child, he did not get the love of his parents and when he became a toddler he was sent to Rebecca Gaskell’s (Robert’s Mother) sister’s house to live there. The reason behind this cruelty was that Richard was having problems providing his family with their basic needs.

When Robert lived with his aunt he used to be a big pain in the neck. His Uncle and Aunt noticed that he was addicted to fighting on small things. He was a regular troublemaker at school and when he got older he developed a sense of fearlessness.

When Robert was nine years old, his aunt died. After this sad event Robert went back to Shropshire to his family. There he went to a school named Market Drayton Grammar School. Over there because of his bad behavior he got expelled and his father was forced to send him to a trade school in Hertfordshire to complete basic education.

Robert’s education was not complete until he aged 18. His parents were so fed up with his behavior that they sent Clive to India in 1743. In 1744 he reached India at the age of 19 and worked as a Junior merchant which’s salary was very little. He was often in a bad mood and was irritated by very small things, because of this irritation he used to fight with people and always stay under depression. In India Robert tried to perform suicide 2 times but he was not able to pull the guns trigger in fear.

Clive thought that the biggest problem in his life was boredom. To get rid of it he started catching up on the education he left and started reading books in the Governor's Library. Soon enough he got an opportunity that really interested him.

Clive was offered to be a sepoy. He took the offer and did a great job. After some time he was promoted to the military officials. He then showed his skills in military planning. The people were amazed by his skills. The battles he fought made him a hero in Britain. He was known as Major General Clive and as Clive of India .

In 1753 Robert married Margaret Maskelyne and they had 9 children. Soon after that Clive became the governor of Bengal. In 1760 Clive returned to Britain. There he got more into politics and had a post in the parliament.

But Clive was beginning to get weak and he was tearing up mentally. In 1774, he committed suicide in his house in London. He did not leave any note about why he committed suicide so the people assumed he felt guilty about his acts. The great hero of Britain was gone.

To conclude Clive's life, he was not an obedient son, he did not have a good childhood. But still he became Nobab General, and a ruthless, fearless and clever military commander, and also a father of 9.
