The pros and the cons of expiry dates

Understanding concepts like expiry dates, best before dates, and food wastage is crucial for food safety and sustainability. Expiry dates on perishable items like dairy and meat indicate the last day the product is safe to consume. Consuming food past this date can lead to health risks due to bacterial growth. Best before dates on less perishable items like canned goods and dry products suggest when the product will be at its best quality, such as peak flavor or texture. However, it may still be safe to eat after this date if stored properly.

Properly comprehending these labels is essential in addressing food wastage. Many individuals mistakenly discard food that is still safe to eat, leading to significant waste. Misinterpretation of these dates is a significant contributor to food waste in households. Education on the distinction between expiry dates and best before dates can help minimize this waste.

FOOD WASTAGE

Food wastage has significant environmental and economic consequences. It results in greenhouse gas emissions, depletes resources like water and energy, and represents financial losses. By enhancing our understanding of food labels and adopting smarter storage and consumption practices, we can effectively reduce food wastage, promoting sustainability and efficiency in food consumption.

Food waste is a significant issue globally, with the United States being one of the worst offenders. Approximately 37% of food waste in the US originates from individual households. A major reason for this waste is the misinterpretation of food expiration dates. Consumers often discard food items that are still safe to eat because they are unsure how to interpret the dates on the labels.

In the early 20th century, assessing the freshness of food was more straightforward as people relied on sight, smell, and touch. However, the introduction of supermarkets and processed foods made it challenging to determine the age of products. To address this, grocers implemented open dating systems where products were labeled with dates indicating optimal freshness.

These dates are not based on scientific evidence and are set arbitrarily by manufacturers and retailers. The aim is to ensure that customers taste the food at its best and repurchase the products. As a result, many foods remain safe to eat beyond their labeled dates. While certain items like meat, ready-to-eat salads, deli meats, and unpasteurized cheeses may pose health risks beyond their dates, the majority of products are still consumable.

It is essential for consumers to use their senses like smell, sight, and taste to determine if the food is fit for consumption. In cases where there is doubt, it is advisable to err on the side of caution. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recommends consuming or freezing meat within a few days of purchase to avoid any risks.

In an effort to reduce food waste, experts suggest standardizing date labels with phrases like "Best if used by" and "Use by" to indicate freshness and safety, respectively. Implementing these standards at a federal level could potentially prevent a significant amount of food waste annually. Additionally, some UK supermarkets have removed date labels on produce to encourage consumers to use their own judgment.

Policies incentivizing grocers and restaurants to donate unsold food could also help reduce food waste. Despite the federal government protecting such donations, confusion around date labels has led to restrictions in at least 20 US states. Contrastingly, countries like France require supermarkets to donate unsold food, setting an example for food waste reduction efforts.

Ultimately, the responsibility lies with consumers to make informed decisions about the freshness and safety of food. By trusting their senses and exercising caution, individuals can contribute to reducing food waste significantly.
