Evaluation System in Education

The process of teaching and testing the growing human child is as old as man himself. Evaluation is the process of assessing the worth, value, or importance of something. It involves collecting and analyzing data to make evaluation-related decisions or assessments. The evaluation system plays a crucial role in shaping the academic journey of students. For evaluation purposes two terms are commonly used: Inspection and evaluation. The purpose of the test is to ensure that the material studied has been appropriately recorded and correctly reproduced. We are talking about finding mental, moral and social changes that occur in the structure of the student’s personality and directly affect his behaviour. The goal is to assess the sum of each candidate's knowledge and measure what they achieved during their training to assess their abilities.

With the emergence need for higher education, there has been an awareness of the need to establish a quality accreditation body for educational assessment. Although evaluation methods vary in the quality of the tools, administrators or supervisors use a variety of tools to evaluate teachers and educators. Program evaluation is a rare practice performed by only a handful of reputable universities. The organizations have been established for quality improvement in public and private schools at levels that will evaluate self-assessment. At the same time, the evaluation program also includes curriculum review and teacher evaluation as well as other feedback tools.

Program/job evaluation is also an important component of educational evaluation. Project evaluation is a measurement tool often used to review and analyze the effectiveness of a project to understand how well it is achieving its vision, mission and goal. There are various ideas or practices for project evaluation. Self-assessment is one of the strategies recommended by the higher education authorities. This self-assessment is based on eight methods. Many public schools followed this approach, but except for the few schools, evaluation were not published properly. This may be because the system is new for the school administration and teachers. Also this self-assessment method does not include a process for continuous improvement. Therefore, there is no continuous improvement after one evaluation cycle. Secondly, most of the employees involved in the preparation of project evaluation documents ignore the fact that they must meet the criteria specified in the self-assessment method.

Continuous assessment is a fundamental component of the evaluation system in education. Students are evaluated through quizzes, assignments, and class participation, fostering a holistic understanding of their progress. However, challenges such as inconsistent examination standards, issues of cheating, and dependence on rote memorization have been persistent concerns. Final examinations, held at the end of each academic term or year, are pivotal in determining students' academic standing. The emphasis on final exams often leads to a high-stakes environment, contributing to stress among students. Practical exams, especially in the sciences, play a crucial role in evaluating hands-on skills and the application of theoretical knowledge.

Where the Education system is decentralized, each province has its educational board responsible for conducting examinations and managing educational matters. This decentralization allows provinces to tailor their evaluation systems to address regional needs and priorities. However, it also results in variations in educational standards and assessment methods across provinces.

The education system has witnessed various reforms aimed at addressing shortcomings and enhancing overall quality. Efforts have been made to shift the focus from rote memorization to critical thinking and practical application of knowledge. Continuous revisions in curricula and examination patterns aim to align education with the needs of a rapidly evolving global landscape.

In conclusion, the evaluation system in education is a multifaceted mechanism that shapes students' academic journeys from primary to tertiary levels. While it serves as a critical tool for assessing knowledge and skills, persistent challenges and ongoing reforms highlight the need for a dynamic and responsive system.
