Emotional Intelligence and The Role of Creativity
How Unlocking of Emotional Intelligence through Art, Music and Imagination plays a critical role for Children

Harmony Hills was a town of hollow echoes of the ringing laughter of its children rebounding off of the streets that branched into lengthy rows of trees. All this was lost on eight-year-old Anya. What used to be full of energy and laughing, full of cheer, she had spent silently blankly staring because her recent father departed from work. She found it quite challenging to hold herself up due to her separated parents.
Mira, Anya's mom, couldn't ignore what was happening to her once vibrant daughter. She missed spontaneous singing and fantastic tales. At her wit's end, she went to the best child therapist she knew, a woman named Dr. Alisha, whose creative use of art, music, and play had helped bring many children healing.
The room of the psychotherapist Alisha was full of fantasy. Bright-washed walls and loaded shelves in abundance with dolls had given a great incentive for exploration. Walking through that door, Anya threw a cursory glance here and there and spotted a small xylophone lying near the center table: "Play it? Anya requested from Dr. Alisha, gently tapping some of the keys, hesitating for a minute more before thumping the one She scrawled her first stuttering attempt in musical notes—the only way that emotion began unlocking.
As weeks turned into months, it was their meetings that would come to be her safety net in time. Alisha introduced her to painting and said, "It's 'put your feelings into the canvas.'" She began in dark colors—the swirling, the swirling blues and grays became the dominant hues, but over time lighter tones emerged. Yellow and greens danced across her canvases, taking the form of a visual diary of hope and resilience.
One day, Dr. Alisha brought a box of clay for Anya. "Let's do something together," she suggested. Taking her small hands, Anya pressed the clay little by little into an enchanting house decorated with flowers. "It is a happy place," Anya whispered her first sparkling words in weeks. This was a breakthrough for her; the world of a happy flower had started to bloom again.
Dr. Alisha described this type as free play also. If no one was going to give any idea of building something with those building blocks, then she made strong castles with bridges, related stories of a kingdom, and all sorts of adventurous tales. Most of her choice was the construction of a moat around some castle. "It keeps out the sadness," she said, demonstrating some serious deep-seatedness within herself regarding her ability to feel safe and in control.
Under the watchful eye of Dr. Alisha, Mira joined Anya. They began growing plants together. The backyard turned into a very colorful sanctuary of flowers. Anya painted merry designs upon pots—sunflowers, rainbows, and stars. Each design represented the joy in Anya's heart again that had slowly faded away. They also had fun with music-making silly rhymes and humming melodies that made their house warm and laughable again.
No wonder then that there was a transformation in Anya. In class, she became that bright Anya again, interested in taking up art-based projects and narrating her imagination-filled stories. The teacher could also notice that some small spark returned to her eyes; this, in turn, proved to be a testimony of the healing touch of creativity.
Dr. Alisha said to Mira, "Art, music, and play are not something children do; they are a language children use to say things they cannot verbalize." That medium was an enormous tool of creative expression for telling stories in the journey of Anya. With these mediums, children can heal and grow, she further continued.
This energized the school at the grassroots to introduce unscheduled playtime within their curriculum for the day. Teachers soon started witnessing incredible levels of reduction in stress among their students and increased creativity combined with greater cooperation among themselves. Parents began endorsing home hobbies after Harmony Hills opined that time was not some frivolous amusement but a window into mental well-being itself.
Months later, Anya finally unveiled a beautiful mural she painted for her school. The artwork was colorful and full of bright sun, flowers in bloom, and a castle at its center. That is the dream world for joy and possibilities. "It is a happy place for everybody," she said, smiling.
Any story was now a harbinger of hope in the hills of Harmony, reminding one and all that transformation potential with creativity lies within each soul. She had found a voice and, through her art, music, and play, strength while inspiring those around her to enter the realm of healing that imagination creates.
