Creative Bookmark Design Activity in Mupat Library: Promoting Literacy in One of the Best School Libraries in Indonesia
A Fun and Effective Way to Encourage Reading and Environmental Awareness Among Elementary School Students

Mupat Library, a school library at Muhammadiyah 4 Elementary School Malang is known as one of the best school libraries in Indonesia, and it's no surprise considering the various literacy activities they offer to their students. The library has a reputation for being a creative space where students can develop a love for reading and improve their literary skills.
One of the most engaging activities that the library offers is the creative bookmark design activity. This activity is not only fun and exciting for students but also promotes literacy and environmental awareness. Students are encouraged to design bookmarks with messages that inspire others to read and take care of the environment.
The design process is an exciting journey for the students, and it's a testament to their creativity and innovation. They start by brainstorming ideas and sketching their designs on paper. Then, they select the best design that represents their message and transfer it onto a bookmark template.
The students use various art materials, such as colored pencils, markers, and watercolors, to add vibrant colors and details to their bookmarks. They also come up with catchy slogans and quotes that inspire and motivate others to read and take care of the environment.
One of the students, Ixchel, shared her experience of designing a bookmark. "I wanted to create a bookmark that reminds everyone to read more and enjoy the process. So, I came up with a design that features a book with the message, 'Reading is Fun.' I used bright colors and added some glitter to make it more eye-catching," said Ixchel.
Another student, Syauqy, designed a bookmark that encourages everyone to take care of the environment. "I drew a tree with the message, 'Plant More Trees, Save the Earth.' I believe that if we take care of the environment, we can create a better world for everyone," said Syauqy.

The students' designs are then collected by the librarian, Dwi Rinda Aulia, who compiles them and prints them into bookmarks. The bookmarks are then placed in the library for everyone to see and use.
Dwi Rinda, the librarian at Mupat Library Muhammadiyah 4 Elementary School, believes that this activity has been very effective in promoting literacy and encouraging students to visit the library. "The bookmarks are a great way to promote reading and environmental awareness. The students are proud of their designs, and it's inspiring to see them come up with such creative and innovative ideas," said Dwi Rinda.
Principal of Muhammadiyah 4 Elementary School, Hana Ayudah is also thrilled with the success of the creative bookmark design activity.
