Achieving My Goal

I am Fikremriam Mekonnen originally from Ethiopia, Africa. I was living in the capital city Addis Ababa, which is also the capital for Africa. In addition with the city developing at a rapid pace recently, the country in general is going through economic and political reforms. My family can be labeled as middle level with the criteria of income. Since kindergarten, I had been an outstanding student with my grades. When I was in preparatory level, I have participated in wide range of software related competitions and researches. We won the tournament hosted by the education bureau for preparatory schools which focuses on designing a registration system for one selected school. And we finish third on the regional competition. I started programming and designing systems at that level.

I have accomplished my bachelor on civil engineering from one of the best universities in the country; Gondar university. While I was studying my bachelor in Gondar University, I have participated in different clubs related to information technology. One of the club was known us “Information Technology for Ethiopia” (ITE), it focuses on undergoing a research on creating a solution technologically for the variety of problems that the country is facing. For example we have received acknowledgement from the mayor of Gondar for the project we did on solving the problem of managing electricity billing system.

After my graduation on July 2016, I started working for a company called Ethiopian Construction Works Corporation (E C W C) as an office engineer. My job was designing and scheduling construction works using variety of softwares. One of the main accomplishment for me in the company was upgrading the traditional file managing method to modern database system with my team. I have done other technology related advancements in the company as both team member and leader. I also worked as supervisor on different sites all over the country.

After I work for around three and a half year, I decided to move one step forward with my life. After a long search for schools abroad that offers my major, I have applied to different colleges and got accepted at three universities. After evaluation I choose La Roche University which is located in Pittsburgh. I and my family agrees that they will cover my tuition fee and I will maintain the living expense with the money I saved while I was working.

I arrived in Pittsburgh on January 16, 2020 (Spring 2020) to attend my MSc program in information systems and become the person who I aim to be since my childhood. I flew about over 17 hours straight to achieve this goal. Currently I’m studying at La Roche University in Pittsburgh, PA. I have finished one semester with a GPA of 3.85 even struggling with the pandemic.

But at this moment, I have faced huge financial difficulty to maintain my living expenses and paying the tuition fee. My parents back home are not working as usual due to COVID19 that leaves them to fight hard for covering some of my expenses and push me towards my vision. I have spent all my saving to assist them and end up short right now. I am trying so many different things to make money and pay for my bill, but I can’t cover all. Thus, I came to you to ask for help. If you can do very little, that will be a huge relief for me. Please assist me at this time of fighting for making my dream becomes real. I can assure you that nobody will regret their decisions of helping me. I will make all of you proud.
