A Rich Man's Genesis
The beginning of a high school entrepreneurship
It all began my freshman year. I had written a book that was a series of short stories compiled into one. I just let my creative juices flow! That book was rolling in about 20 bucks a day. I then knew from the variety what people wanted. People must like short stories.
My senior year has arrived. I had perfected my technique in short fictional narrative writing. I couldn't believe my eyes when I started printing books and they were selling out right off the printer! By that point, I knew I was doing something right. However, I noticed only faculty had interest. I wanted to reach out to the ENTIRE school with something amazing. So, I started with 3D trinkets. Like uniquely shaped little lock boxes and keychains. I sold those for about 5 bucks a piece, paid printing expenses, and nonetheless they didn't sell well given the high prices.
I remained silent. I observed other students' side hustles. They were selling snacks and candies and sodas, much like what I used to do at the beginning of my senior year. But that was slow, passive income. I was looking for a more rapid fix. I thought, and thought. Alas, it came to me!
I need not look further than my own kitchen. My family owns a two-sandwich press. I then began to think even more. What if I sell different kinds of grilled cheese to the school? Granted, I would have to be low-profile since the lunch ladies like their money too! But I also knew school lunches weren't the greatest, and this was something people of all ages could enjoy!
So, I began to ponder the local grocery store, and I picked up some cheese, bread and even some bacon for those that wanted a little something extra. I bought a modest $10 worth of items, and brought them to school. Needless to say, I sold out within an hour! I knew I needed to double up, as I did after all make over 22 bucks.
This time, I blew all my money on food supplies because why not! I did however luck out and sold out AGAIN the next day. However, there was one obstacle. An administrator was trying to shut down everybody's food gig, and naturally, students protested and defended the underground grilled cheese stand. I was able to run the whole day, sold out again, and even had a crew of cooks and delivery boys, one of which restocked for me as a kind gesture. I had started with $10 and made 55 that day, and when I counted my cash box, my jaw dropped.
Moral of this story; there is always going to be something that can become something bigger. You just have to find it. And if I, an 18 year old still in high school can run a full on business in a matter of two days, making crazy profit, anyone can find their gig. My advice to all of you entrepreneurs, look for what appeals to all groups, and something that battles an ongoing problem in life around you!
Even if it is just a sandwich, that sandwich has a story behind it. It took four years to perfect that hustle. And quite frankly, I am very proud of it. The school even got to the point where the administrators did not care! I even fed a sandwich to a local cop! Anyway, find your grilled cheese! No matter how long it takes, everyone can have their gig, you just have to feel for it, and experiment. Trial and error is a huge part of the business world!
