We Rose Together

From the Ground Up

By Maurena Leigh McKeePublished 4 years ago 4 min read

Resonating with daily life in the valley requires connecting with how the sun and its light-rays relate with the moisture in the air. The fog rolls in over the mountains and there is a mystical moment to be felt when a heart is open to the experience of the light.

We rose together, as the sun began to prepare its rising over the horizon. The clouds were parting along the peaks of the mountain tops off in the distance. The day's divine mission was about to begin, and we had no idea what was ahead. We called out to the mist, in knowing there was a hidden presence ready to share a message. I could feel from within that a winged-one is seeking assistance, and we were led down a trail but the destination was unclear in the mind. We walked for miles that day, at times walking in silence side-by-side. I reminisced on the night before when we sung out to the stars in the night; we were staring at the north star and calling out to an unknown constellation.

The trail went on for miles, winding around the mountain edge. At times the trail would rise higher up along the mountain; we noticed the temperture drop as went higher, and I remember feeling my blood thinning. Eventually, we found there was a central area along the mountain where felt the most easeful of breath and where we could see great views into the forest range.

As we began to settle into the trail, I felt more present in my surroundings. Every sound I made, from my footsteps to my breath, had a ripple in both my ears and the atmosphere around us. I was forunate to be together with my partner after so many moments of being apart on our journey. I smiled at his glissening cheeks, wishing to give him a kiss.

Suddenly, I tripped and slid down a great distance as rocks rolled down after me. I rolled and rolled, watching the world turn up side down many times, in slow motion. I was screaming with all my might, feeling the engravements of scrapes on my body from the mountain rock formation. I began to lose my breath, as this fall continued. I could see the sun turn round and round as my body tumbled down the mountain, until I rolled deep into a crevice in the mountain.

The world stood still, in darkness, with only a small amount of sunlight coming through the cave I had ultimately landed. I paused to gather what had happened, only to realize I had lost my voice. Breathe, I told myself as I rose from knees to my feet and rested my body along a rockwall. I began feeling my way around the cave, walking slowly, paying attention to the pain coming from right hip. Breathing and gripping the rockway was the only way to the small amount of sunlight shining through the front end of the cave. The fall had cleared out my mind of all thought, but I continued with a goal to follow the sunlight.

I witnessed the sound of my footsteps in the crunchy leaves and squishy mud benethe me for a sense of calm and connection with my body. The sunrays were shining through at different angles on the rockwall, and my breath was leaving some mist in the air during my exchange of oxygen with the atmosphere. I could take deep breaths, filling up my lungs, but I could not speak or call out to my partner. This silencing had me in more connection with my sensory experience. I suddenly heard a small collection of sounds at the ground level a few feet away. Step by step, I directed my ear toward the noise, softening my footsteps and breath.

As I arrived closer to the noise, I realized the sound was from another living being that could sense my arrival. The sound of a creature began to sound much louder, making a screeching noise, upon a call for help. I recognized this sound from my prior time while birding with a group of friends. The screech reached its peak as I got nearer. I began to clear the rocks that had covered an owl's nest. Deeply embedded in the mud were three baby barn owls in a nest that must had fallen. The owls sounded louder and louder as I removed the rocks around their vacinity and cleared the way for more sunlight.

At this time, my partner had been searching for me. Little did I know, he had encountered support along the way. A barn owl had been flying alongside him, directing him to the cave, captivating his attention by circle ahead. He began following the mother owl down the mountain. The mother owl had led my partner right to us, as he heard the baby owls screeching. He began clearing the rocks that piled up over the cave, until the sunlight shined through into the cervice.

At the sight of the sun, I witnessed the mother owl fly inside toward her babies and my partner run toward me with his arms open. The owls congregated and screeched with a tremondous sound of unity. I rose from my knees and opened my arms for my partner's embrace, in knowing that we have united again.
