The Power of Planting Trees

Nature's Superheroes Saving Our Planet

By Oliwia Published 2 years ago 3 min read

Amid the growing threat of change to our environment, probably the most effective and simple solution is overlooked: planting a tree. Trees are the nature's real superheroes working silently at the back to save the planet, fighting global warming, and ensuring that the coming generation will have a livable environment.

Trees are far beyond just an ornament in a landscape and are, indeed, an important entity for the very feat of Mother Earth's health. They draw carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, store it as carbon, and release back oxygen. This natural process helps regulate the adverse effects of climate change by limiting the volume of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. A mature leafy tree is estimated to absorb as much as 48 lb of CO2 per year; annually, it will catch enough carbon to offset a car travelling 26,000 miles.

Trees serve to fight climate change, but that is not the only service they offer. They provide wildlife habitats, sustain biodiversity, and prevent soil erosion. Roots of trees hold the ground together, hence preventing landslides and floods, while their canopies offer shade; thus, they cool our cities and reduce the need for air conditioning.

A Green Lifeline of Urban Trees

Trees are of particular significance in urban areas. As cities expand and temperatures rise, huge patches of land become scorchingly hot in comparison to hinterland—a condition termed the urban heat island effect. Trees provide a natural air-conditioning effect, cooling down the air around them by as many as 10 degrees Fahrenheit through transpiration. Equally, they filter the air, cleaning it of pollutants and other dangerous tiny particles by passing them through their leaves.

Research has shown that trees in cities can also reduce stress and improve both mental health and community interaction. Just taking a walk in a park lined with trees can lower blood pressure, anxiety, and infuse a sense of well-being. This is the need for our physical and mental health in a world that becomes more and more digitized daily.

One More Tree Foundation

An organization that is making such a difference in this regard is the One More Tree Foundation. This is an international organization committed to reforesting the world through the planting of trees. 'Each individual tree counts' is a motto and belief on which the foundation is established and strives to improve reforestation and appropriate land management.

The One More Tree Foundation is committed to working with local and community governments, environmental organizations, and the local communities in the tree-planting exercise in areas most affected by deforestation and climate change. It basically restores ecosystems and enables biodiversity to thrive as it supports the livelihoods of the people who depend on forests, all by targeting the areas where reforestation can have the most impact: degraded lands and urban environments.

Other than tree-planting work, the foundation is targeting education and awareness. It will inspire people toward personal action and provide resources to support anyone who wants to take affirmative action. As part of the personal tree-planting process, support for reforestation projects, or campaigning for changes in policy, the One More Tree Foundation empowers people to be effective in the battle against time for climate change.

Planting the Future

Well, there is this good news: everyone can plant a tree. If it's engaging with the local tree-planting initiative, funding reforestation like that done by the One More Tree Foundation, or simply planting one in its backyard—all of these count. In fact, some studies have suggested that one trillion trees could remove two-thirds of all carbon emissions that had been released since the Industrial Revolution.

But quantity is not all, quality also matters. What is important is to plant the right trees in the right places. Surely, planting of well-adapted native species has a high possibility of survival and will afford maximum ecological benefits. And that goes with the protection of existing forests—old-growth forests, massive stores of carbon, and very rich ecosystems.

Just the act of planting a tree makes such a huge difference. It is contributory, in each small step, toward a great solution: a sustainable future for the following generation. It is the ambition of trees through climate change—to stand tall among the problems and glow with hope on behalf of nature.

The next time you see a tree, find a moment for the gratitude that is part and parcel of its being within this world. Better still, when you see a tree, think about planting one yourself. It seems trees are best suited for being the unsung heroes we are all searching for in saving this planet.
