The Day the Oceans Turned to Lava

What If All Water Turned Into Lava + Other Cool What If's

The ocean turns red-hot; you attempt to approach for a closer inspection, but the air grows increasingly scorching, akin to reaching into an oven. The sand beneath your feet is so hot that your rubber slippers begin to melt. In an inexplicable transformation, the ocean has become a seething, gooey lava. Panic sets in, and you sprint inland, observing a chaotic scene of people running amok. In reality, lava consists of molten rocks from beneath the Earth's surface.

Deep within our planet, at a depth comparable to the distance between New York and Philadelphia, intense underground heat from the core melts rocks, akin to how the sun melts ice cream. When these rocks liquefy, their temperatures can soar to around 2,200 degrees Fahrenheit. But don't fret; this phenomenon occurs extremely deep underground and only in specific regions, primarily around the Atlantic Ocean. It surfaces as a super-hot, gooey orange liquid called lava when there's immense pressure, typically erupting through a volcano's neck. Strangely, the entire ocean has transformed into lava now. Despite this, from a considerable distance, it does appear quite mesmerizing.

Visually, it's incredibly perilous. Bid farewell to the once-beautiful blue waves and ocean currents. Unlike water, lava is denser, akin to creamy peanut butter in texture. Consequently, the wind can no longer push it around as it did with water. Paradoxically, this thickness implies that nothing can submerge or swim in it. Even if some ocean creatures could endure the lava's scorching temperatures, they couldn't inhabit it. Instead, depending on their density, they would either sink or float on the surface. Hence, all our marine friends and other creatures that once inhabited the ocean must seek a new body of water if they wish to survive. Interestingly, the only creatures on this planet that might withstand the heat of lava are tardigrades.

In an unprecedented cataclysm, the world witnesses the unfathomable: the oceans, once serene and life-giving, morph into searing lava, reshaping life on Earth in unimaginable ways. Coastal regions, once bustling with life, now stand desolate, obliterated by the molten onslaught. Marine life, once abundant, faces extinction, forcing humans into a relentless struggle for survival.

The aftermath of this apocalyptic event ushers in a new era of adaptation and ingenuity. With traditional sources of water and electricity eradicated, human civilization faces its greatest challenge. Communities band together, cultivating their own sustenance and embarking on treacherous quests to secure water, the most precious resource in this scorching new world.

Meanwhile, marine creatures, defying their natural habitat, take to the skies. The once familiar sight of birds is replaced by a surreal spectacle of fish, octopuses, and even whales soaring above rooftops. Humans, too, undergo unexpected changes, growing gills to survive in the transformed environment.

Amidst this chaos, society grapples with the need for new infrastructure and survival strategies. The skies become a playground for fishing vessels suspended by balloons, capturing airborne fish, while innovative solutions emerge to harness the remaining resources.

As humanity adjusts to its new reality, dark mysteries unravel. Strange physical changes befall individuals, granting them the ability to breathe underwater. The underwater world becomes a refuge, prompting humans to adapt and thrive beneath the waves.

Yet, amidst the adversity, the indomitable human spirit perseveres. Communities forge stronger bonds, learning to coexist with the extraordinary phenomena and finding hope in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges. The world may have changed beyond recognition, but the resilience of humanity prevails, illuminating a path forward in this surreal and transformed existence.
