A large number of animals are listed as endangered each year, and a significant number of them end up being listed as extinct. But there are quite a few of the top ten animals that are considered extinct and emerged again. They are the New Dutch Rat, the Short-winged Waterhen, the Pygmy Spectacles Monkey, the Laotian Rock Rat, the Four-lined Stone cipher, the New Caledonia Giant Gecko, the Prairie Western Reliever, the Tooth-billed Woodpecker, the Kangaroo Wolf, and the Honshu Wolf.

I. New Holland Rat

What are the top ten animals in the natural world that are thought to be extinct and appearing again?

The first time it was discovered was in 1843, and although it was later thought to have been extinct for over 100 years, the New Holland Rat was rediscovered in 1967. Like all rats, these animals are omnivores. Eating many things, seeds, and fungi. Due to habitat loss, the population of the New Holland Rat is expected to decline by about 10% in the next decade.

II. Short-winged Water Grouse

They were rediscovered while trying to be confirmed as extinct, declared extinct in 1898, and found alive 50 years later. These flightless birds are native to New Zealand, but they have wings and are only used for mating displays. Thanks to a captive breeding program, numbers have increased over the years. But not as many as before, so the short-winged waterfowl is still considered endangered.

III. Pygmy spectacles monkeys

These tiny primates have large, round eyes, hairless ears, long finger-tipped claws, and long, thin tails to help balance their bodies and grip tree branches. Ground dwellers were added to the list of extinct creatures when no specimens were found before 1930. 80 years later, they were found again by expeditions.

IV. Laotian Rock Rat

It is known as a living fossil, with some remains dating back 11 million years. Since they are rarely seen during the day, it is believed that they are nocturnal. They are herbivores, eating mainly grass, seeds, and leaves. Occasionally, they would eat insects. This animal was rediscovered in 1996, and several other specimens have been found since then.

V. Tetrahedron sensibilities

What are the top ten animals in the natural world that are thought to be extinct and reappearing? No. 2

A rather long lizard, up to 50 cm (20 inches) long, native to Pine Island off the coast of New Caledonia. They live mainly on land and are likely nocturnal. They are omnivorous, eating other smaller lizards, insects, and birds. These animals were thought to be extinct for more than 100 years, and then, in December 2003, experts from the French Natural History Museum discovered the remains of this species again.

VI. New Caledonia giant gecko

Once found in New Caledonia, this gecko was thought to have been extinct for a long time. Then, in 1994, they suddenly reappeared. With a total length of 20 cm (8 inches) and no eyelids, they can live to a mature age of 15-20 years.

VII. Prairie Western Rhamphorhynchus

First discovered in 1930, when frightened they erect the hairs on their backs and emit a fluid from their glands. In 1971, some of them were found hiding in areas such as Bolivia, Argentina, and Paraguay, when people became aware of their presence again.

VIII. Ivory-billed woodpecker

What are the top ten animals in the natural world that are thought to be extinct and reappearing? No. 3

It has been 73 years since the last verified photo of this bird was taken. These birds are 51 centimeters (20 inches) long and have a wingspan of about 76 centimeters (30 inches), they are considered to be carnivores and their diet relies mainly on insects, and they were found again in Florida in 2006 and 2007.

IX. Kangaroo wolf

Said to have become extinct in 1936, they were actively hunted by ranchers in the 19th and early 20th centuries to prevent them from attacking livestock. They are marsupials, and little is known about their mating and breeding habits, although there have been many sightings since then, but they have not been fully confirmed.

X. Honshu Wolves

They are only 76-89 cm (30-35 inches) long and about 30 cm (12 inches) tall. Considered a subspecies of the gray wolves, they were first discovered in 1839 and the last wolf was officially killed in 1905. They have been reported by concerned villagers to have walked along the edge of Highland Creek, but so far, none of these sightings have been confirmed.
