The Eyes of the Moon
There are some nights when you can lay your head down at the end of the day and drift off to sleep rather comfortably. Your pillow cradles your head ever so snugly, extra soft after a long day, putting the mind at ease. I can’t say I remember the last time I had one of those nights. For the past five years, I’ve tossed and turned, limbs restless while my hands claw at the sheets, grasping for something just out of reach. Alone in the dark, it did not matter if my eyes were open or closed, the image was always the same. A haunting memory that will never cease to be. My thoughts shift and turn, always touching upon the fact that I kept a gun under the bed. . . and what I would do with it when I saw her again.

A Little Wolfie Cub
“Once upon a time, there was a little wolf cub.” The deep grizzled voice cut through the dimly lit room and down into the fluffy mound of tussled blankets and sheets that wiggled and squirmed with a little wild girl. “It was a cub with the wildest hair, the wildest grin, and the wildest heart.” A little voice squeaked from between the layers, muffled and soft, “Just like me, granny?” The old weathered face creased with well earned wrinkles as it grinned into the night. “Oh my sweet wild one, this particular wolf cub was fearless and the bravest of the whole pack." A tuft of brownish blonde hair statically rose from a small opening in the blanket nest that the little girl had been squirmed into. Rosy cheeks and round blue eyes appeared in the blankets frame and shined up into the dusky muted brown ones that were sunken into the old woman's leathered skin. “And her name was Wolfie?” The pure hope in the little girl’s eyes made Granny’s heart smile a little. Oh, To be that young again. She could not help herself as she chuckled a little in her rough coughing way, “Yes little one, it was Wolfie. Now settle down and let me tell you what happened to this little puppy." A soft sigh was followed by a tender settling. The girl cuddled into her granny’s arms, “Sorry Granny. I’m ok now.”

Saved by the clouds
Finally, old enough for an adventure, I'd had three weeks exploring the Brazilian coastline, stopping at a small village. I spotted a chalkboard sign for a boat trip and thought I’d give it a go. The condition of the boat should’ve warned me off, large enough for the 20 or so passengers but rather weathered, as soon as we’d set off the two crew, who looked like trainee pirates were throwing drink down their necks. A large American couple berated them for drinking but got a volley of abuse when attempting to get them to focus on keeping everyone safe. The resulting argument provided the added distraction causing the boat to drag itself over a barely visible cluster of rocks.

I am swimming, thrusting my arms through golden water—golden like oil. The water grows thick and syrupy, then it pulls me under. I’m in a bottle, glass sloping above me. Someone tilts and pours, and I slide onto a pan, palms burning from the heat. I slip and roll in the slick spill. Steam rises off my wet hair. Then I am smothered under the sticky weight of raw meat.

The craft jerked and jolted in an arrhythmic manner as it flew to the heart of Homasoro City, where even more such activities awaited them.
