Why A Carrington Event Would Be Worse Today Than In 1859
In the early morning on September 1st, 1859, Richard Carrington climbed into the private observatory at his country estate outside of London. After cranking open the domes shutters to see a clear blue sky, Carrington pointed his telescope toward the sun and began to sketch a cluster of magnificent-sized dark spots freckling the surface. Carrington spotted what he described as “two patches of intensely bright and white light.” Those patches appeared to erupt from the sunspots.

What we’ve learned after 32 years of NASA’s Hubble
On April 24, 1990, NASA launched the Hubble Space Telescope into Earth’s orbit. This photo shows the Hubble Space telescope being deployed, on April 25, 1990, one day after its launch. It was taken by the IMAX Cargo Bay Camera (ICBC) mounted aboard the space shuttle Discovery. It has been operational for 32 years, and has not been serviced since 2009. With a 2.4-meter diameter mirror, it gathers as much light in 1 minute as a 160-mm (6.3″) telescope would require 3 hours and 45 minutes to gather.
