National Grade II Brown-backed Tanager found for the first time in Ya'an

Two days ago, rare animals and plants were found continuously in Zhejiang and other places, triggering concern and discussion among netizens. Many people are speculating that it is now the season of changing seasons, which is the active period for animals.

Indeed, according to the news on September 22, two days ago in Ya'an, Sichuan found a national second-class protected animal - a brown-backed frog, and more than one instantly rushed to the Sichuan hot list!

The first discovery was made on September 17 this year, but the monitoring patrollers of Ya'an Giant Panda National Park, while conducting a routine work check in the park's Cheliping area, found several very strange animals, which at first glance are birds.

In addition, they were chirping and foraging on the grass by the creek. The staff thought it was unusual and took a video. When they returned, animal experts confirmed that they were real wild brown-backed frogs through comparative analysis.

A total of five brown-backed frogs were found, including two adults and three sub-adults. It is the first time to be found in Ya'an, which is of great significance and has attracted attention and discussion from all sides.

Some friends may not know much about the brown-backed frog, although its name is "chicken". They are typical birds, small in size, generally weighing about 70 grams. They are widely distributed in various regions of Asia, feeding on various aquatic insects, and are protected by the State Grade II.

This time, the staff found these animals are quite typical because their fur color is very special:

According to the staff's description: These birds have a dark smoky gray head, neck, and lower body, a dark top and occiput, and a light head. The upper half of the body is olive from forehead to tail, including both wing surfaces and the inner flight feathers. The tail feathers are covered with white spots and the flight feathers are dark brown. The chin and throat are white, and the center of the chest and belly are dark gray with dark olive-brown horizontal spots.

Because of the same color, the five birds, in this case, cannot be directly distinguished from each other, but there are several very distinctive highlights:

1. The young birds can walk independently soon after birth, and then go out to feed with the adults. The young birds never return to the nest after they leave it, typical of "leaving home and never returning".

2. Their irises are interesting. When they are young, their irises are brown, and when they reach adulthood, they turn blood red, so they are better at controlling the size of their pupils. So their adaptation and reaction time are super fast, both in bright and dark areas.

Because of this special skill, they often come out of hiding in the early morning light to feed in the grass, which is unexpected and hard to avoid.

After this discovery in Ya'an, the park's management said they would carry out targeted protection and observation to understand their habits.
