Once upon a time, the earth’s ecosystem was in harmony. Every living creature, big or small, contributed positively to the system. The flora and fauna could coexist and play their roles effectively without worry. The rivers flowed freely, the air was clean, and the earth was green. Then, man came and changed everything.
At first, man was just one among the animals in the ecosystem. They hunted for food and lived a nomadic lifestyle. Man’s presence did not significantly affect the environment. But as civilization evolved, so did the negative impact of man on the world.
The arrival of agriculture changed the way humans relate to the ecosystem. The cultivation of crops resulted in deforestation, which in turn caused soil erosion, loss of biodiversity, and other unanticipated effects on animals living in the forests. The construction of cities, factories, and other infrastructure, in later times, caused further deforestation and air pollution.
Man’s quest to conquer the environment led to rampant destruction of habitats, changing of the ecological balance, and loss of biodiversity. The extinction of plants and animals due to human action threatens the ecosystem. For example, the disappearance of bees, which have been in decline in the past decade, may affect the pollination of plants, which could have negative impacts on the food chain.
Additionally, human beings have contributed to the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere through various human activities. Carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide trap heat, resulting in global warming which threatens the balance of the ecosystem. Climate change results in more frequent, severe weather events such as drought or flooding, which have disastrous effects on the survival of living organisms in the ecosystem.
Moreover, human beings practice unsustainable fishing practices that threaten marine ecosystem biodiversity. Overfishing, by depleting the population of fish, has a cascade of effects on other marine species, leading to food shortages, making it difficult for the marine animals to survive, and threaten the livelihood of humans who depend on fishing, as well.
The ecosystem is a diverse and complex system that works best when all its components, animals, plants, and lands, are in sync. Human activities have disrupted the delicate balance that had maintained over thousands of years. Land degradation, the loss of biodiversity, and climate change all occur due to human actions.
As a global community, it is imperative to reduce human impact on the ecosystem, so as to leave behind a healthy planet for future generations. The world has seen a new commitment in recent years towards reducing carbon emissions and addressing environmental problems, evidenced by the Paris Agreement among nations to limit climate change.
The conservation of land and sea must also be a cooperative effort among governments, NGOs, industries and individuals, all must come together and create policies that can help reduce human impact on the environment. Such policies could include afforestation programs, international agreements to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and incentivizing the use of renewable energies to reduce dependence on fossil fuel.
Humans must also shift habits to practices that promote sustainability such as using public transport or bicycles instead of cars, recycling and reducing waste, and taking care of the environment. Citizens must become more environmentally conscious and engage in environmentally-friendly practices to create momentum for radical changes.
In conclusion, humans have not always been kind to the environment. Their activities mostly result from an ignorance of the implications of man's actions on the ecosystem. With modern technologies, humans have affected the environment more than any other species in history. However, the world has experienced more natural disasters, and climate change is staring at the human race. It is up to all of us to work together to protect the environment and safeguard the future.
