Why Do Birds Fly in V-Formations?
In sweltering Greater Los Angeles, it's that wonderful time of year again. For the first time in months, it's actually enjoyable to be outside! The new season's cool winds bluster from the northeast, forcing out the hundred-degree-plus weather that kept us all cowering under shade. And, in my neck of the woods, a familiar honk rings in the fresh autumn breeze.

Burdens
The wind is what did it. Whenever Ivan gained purchase on the next snowbank, the wind would smack against his backpack, down on his shoulders, and he would slide a foot back down the mountain. His climbing rack had never felt so heavy, not over the steepest boulder of all the mountains he climbed. The wind was pushing him down, and he could not take a single step up carrying all that weight.

Crystal Mind and the Awakening
“Love is the answer.” My Father whispered. It was his answer, what he wished he said, on the day he became an adult. And now, today, it was my turn. At the far remote part of my village there is a doorway, a crystal gate, that the elders say leads to other dimensions. The crystalline gate is fully aware, they say. It is a great secret in our village, and unknown to the rest of the world. Only once in your lifetime may you attempt to enter into the Crystal Mind, as we call it, but only if the Crystal Mind accepts your answer. Your answer, to the question, What is your highest truth?

Camila
Growing up in the southernmost part of Mexico, it wasn’t uncommon to encounter a wide range of wildlife. From small, radiantly colored frogs that looked like they had been hand painted by a master. To large and ominous cats that prowled the night and who’s purrs made your own chest tremble. On the 4 acres or so of land that my family owned and lived in and made a couple houses in, there was an abundant population of chickens, turkeys, five dogs, a cat, pigs, and two horses. But out of all the animals I had seen throughout my years there, one stood out from the rest.

Italians, Disney World, and The Scarlet Macaw
This story is crazy and random, but when I saw "Scarlet Macaw" listed as a challenege, I knew it was an opportunity I couldn't pass up. Eventually, the infamous Scarlet Macaw will make it's debut as our main character, so hang tight! This story begins with my family of crazy Italians who decided to drive from Rhode Island to Disney World.

When the Dark Men Come
He sits in the darkness of the hollow tree and waits. He knows it will only be a matter of time now. Soon the men will come. They will creep silently through the tall grass, climb the trees with their sharp-clawed feet, and steal the chicks from all the nests. He knows this because it won’t be the first time. It has happened so many times before. He learned not to fight because that could cause more harm or cause the man to accidentally drop… He shakes his head as he blocks the traumatic memory from his mind. It was the only reason he stopped fighting. Was he a terrible father for not fighting? He knew that some of the others fought still. The consequences were often devastating. He hated cowering in the back of the nest with his mate as the large dirty hands reached in to scoop up their chicks, feeling so powerless as he watched his chicks disappear into the black abyss. He tried to convince himself that if he let them go without a fight, ironically, they might actually have a better chance at survival. Or, at least he hoped so.

Too Late. Top Story - October 2021.
Today I walked down 3rd Avenue--the street I grew up on and walked hundreds of times all those years ago. I thought about those walks home from school every day: watching and listening to birds fluttering through the canopies of trees above; looking to my right to see the big beautiful Rocky Mountains full of majesty and life; and taking in the clean, fresh air underneath the beautiful, clear, blue sky. But this time, it was different.

Extinct Me Not
Why am I seeing fewer and fewer blue friends flying around? They must be migrating to a better place, a place that isn't constantly being revived by those massive machines spraying out water onto the trees of my home. Don't they understand that bringing these machines with water is only making things worst. We're not solving the problem, were masking who is truly to blame, and that is the 2 legged ones.
