Why New Jersey is called the Garden State, beyond the beaches and boardwalks of the Jersey Shore.
When most people think of New Jersey, they often picture the Jersey Shore—beaches, boardwalks, and perhaps a bit of that pop-culture-fueled party scene. But having lived here my whole life, I can tell you there’s so much more to this state than the sand and waves. Don’t get me wrong—the Shore is great, but New Jersey’s real charm is what lies beyond those beach towns.
A Haven for Nature Lovers
Growing up in New Jersey, I’ve always been drawn to its natural beauty, which is something a lot of people miss when they only think of the Shore. One of my favorite spots is the Delaware Water Gap, an area filled with stunning views, hiking trails, and waterways perfect for kayaking or canoeing. It’s where I go to disconnect from the busy world and just enjoy being outdoors. The Water Gap is a place where you can easily forget that you’re in one of the most densely populated states in the U.S.
Another underrated gem is the Pinelands National Reserve, also known as the Pine Barrens. This 1.1 million-acre reserve is full of trails and unique wildlife. It’s one of those peaceful escapes I turn to when I need to recharge, whether I’m out hiking or just soaking in the quiet. If you’re a hiker like me, you’ll also appreciate that New Jersey has a stretch of the Appalachian Trail, offering incredible views and a peaceful retreat into nature.
A Rich Cultural and Historical Heritage
New Jersey is rich in history, and I’m proud of how integral the state was in shaping America. If you’re a history buff, Princeton Battlefield and Washington Crossing State Park are great places to visit, offering a glimpse into the Revolutionary War. I’ve walked those grounds a few times, and it always leaves me with a sense of appreciation for the role New Jersey played in securing American independence.
There’s also Ellis Island and Liberty State Park, right across from New York City, which hold so much history for millions of immigrants who came to this country for a better life. As a lifelong New Jersey resident, it’s humbling to know that my state was the starting point for so many American dreams.
But it’s not all history; New Jersey has some seriously vibrant cultural hotspots. Newark, Jersey City, and Paterson all have their own unique arts and cultural scenes, filled with museums, theaters, and galleries. The New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in Newark is one of the largest performing arts venues in the country, and I’ve had the chance to catch a few world-class performances there over the years.
A Thriving Food Scene
Now, let’s talk food. Everyone knows about New Jersey diners—we’ve got more diners per capita than anywhere else—but the food scene goes way beyond that. Hoboken is home to some of the best Italian food on the East Coast. Every time I’m there, I make it a point to grab a slice of pizza or visit one of the old-school Italian bakeries. And, if you love fresh produce, New Jersey’s nickname "The Garden State" is no joke. We produce some of the country’s best blueberries, cranberries, and tomatoes, which show up in all kinds of amazing farm-to-table restaurants.
Then there’s the seafood. If you’re into clams, oysters, or lobster rolls, you’re in the right place. With easy access to the coast, some of the freshest seafood you can find is right here, and it’s not just limited to the Shore.
Top-Tier Education and Innovation
New Jersey is more than just scenic views and good food; it’s a hub for education and innovation. Princeton University and Rutgers University are two of the best schools in the country, and they’ve played huge roles in research and technological advancements. In fact, Thomas Edison’s Menlo Park lab, where the light bulb was born, is right here in New Jersey. The state is still a leader in technology, home to pharmaceutical giants and research startups that are pushing the boundaries of innovation.
A Perfect Blend of Urban and Suburban Life
The best part about living in New Jersey, at least for me, is the balance between urban life and natural beauty. Towns like Montclair, Maplewood, and Summit offer easy access to New York City but still have that suburban charm that makes for a great place to raise a family. You can spend the morning hiking in the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge and be back in time for a nice dinner in a bustling downtown area.

So, the next time someone mentions New Jersey, think beyond the Jersey Shore. It’s not just a summer destination—it’s a place full of history, culture, natural beauty, and incredible food. From the Pinelands to Princeton, there’s so much more to discover in the Garden State. Once you venture beyond the boardwalk, you’ll see why New Jersey is a place that offers something for everyone.
