Exploring the Lykia Way
A Journey through History and Nature
If you're a fan of hiking and ancient history, the Lykia Way in Turkey is an absolute must-visit destination. The trail winds its way through rugged mountains, along sparkling seas, and past ruins of ancient civilizations. I recently had the opportunity to hike the Lykia Way, and it was an experience that will stay with me for a lifetime.
The Lykia Way is a 540-kilometer trail that runs along the southwestern coast of Turkey, from Fethiye to Antalya. The trail is divided into 29 sections, each one taking about a day to complete. It's possible to hike the entire trail, or just pick and choose sections based on your interests and abilities. I opted for a six-day hike, covering sections 6-11.
The hike began in the small village of Faralya, which clings to the side of a mountain overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. From there, we set off on a winding trail through pine forests and scrubland, with stunning views of the sea below. The terrain was steep and challenging at times, but the payoff was well worth it – we were treated to panoramic views of the turquoise waters and the rocky coastline.
One of the highlights of the hike was the chance to explore ancient ruins along the way. The Lykian civilization once thrived in this area, and there are numerous ruins scattered throughout the landscape. We visited the ruins of a Lycian city, where we were able to see the remains of a Roman amphitheater, a temple, and a Byzantine church. It was fascinating to imagine what life must have been like for the ancient Lykians who once inhabited the area.
Another highlight of the hike was the chance to experience the local culture. We passed through small villages and towns along the way, where we were able to sample local cuisine and interact with the friendly locals. One evening, we stayed in a traditional stone house in a village near the trail. The house was cozy and comfortable, and the owners cooked us a delicious meal using fresh ingredients from their garden.
Of course, the natural beauty of the Lykia Way was also a highlight. The trail takes hikers through a variety of landscapes, from rocky cliffs to sandy beaches, from fragrant pine forests to scrubby heathland. Each day brought new vistas and new surprises, from hidden waterfalls to dramatic sea caves.
As we hiked, we were constantly surrounded by the sounds and scents of nature. We saw colorful wildflowers, heard the chirping of birds, and breathed in the fresh mountain air. The trail also offered the opportunity for a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea.
The Lykia Way is not for the faint of heart – it's a challenging hike that requires a certain level of fitness and experience. But for those who are up for the challenge, it's an unforgettable adventure through history and nature. The trail is well-marked and maintained, with plenty of opportunities for rest and refreshment along the way.
One thing that struck me about the Lykia Way was how unspoiled and uncrowded it felt. Unlike some popular hiking destinations, the trail was not overrun with tourists. Instead, we had the chance to experience the natural beauty and rich history of the area in a more intimate and authentic way.
At the end of our six-day hike, we arrived in the coastal town of Kas, where we were able to relax and reflect on our journey. Kas is a charming town with a laid-back vibe and plenty of opportunities for rest and relaxation. We spent our last evening in Turkey watching the sunset over the Mediterranean Sea, feeling
