"Waste Water Management"

1.2.Introduction:
Beside solid waste, wastewater pollution is also a major problem of the country. Untreated water from industries, agriculture, domestic, and textile directly discharged into the water bodies. This discharge pollutes the natural water bodies and cause water diseases to human. We can say that a large number of local industries that work on larger scale discharge tons of gallons of polluted water every day. This water contains heavy metals and other toxic chemicals that directly affect the living organism. Marine animals are also affected by this pollution. The presence of heavy metals in the polluted water may clog the gills of the fish and lead them their death.
Similarly large number of Sulfate and nitrogen compounds present in impure water act as a catalyst for the growth of algal blooms. These algal blooms block the sunlight to reach deep down to the water surface and ultimately cause the reduction of oxygen level in the water. Impurities present in the water are the major cause of their death.
A)-Water Quality:
Water quality in rural areas is very poor. This is so because the national committees do not pay regular attention on testing. There was a lack of proper inspection among rural areas. We used to see a large number of waste dumps along with water present in some areas. There is no system of proper cleaning. Water points that are owned by small sectors lack the testing facility due to lack of testing laboratories. For instance the water quality of some areas of Sindh were checked, it was conclude that it is highly unsafe and includes a large number of contaminants. There is also no management for clean drinking water. People have to travel long distances in search of clean water.
B)-Sector wise production of wastewater in Pakistan:
Pakistan is a developing country, due to industries a large number of waste water produced on regular basis. Large tons of water discharge containing heavy metals, toxic dyes, chemicals and other carcinogenic material discharge every day. According to survey they collected some data form Sindh rural areas and estimated the level of water pollution. According to this survey, the whole estimation is shown in the table below [3];
No Source Volume in 100m3y1 Volume in %
1 Industries 456 9
2 Commercial 567 5
3 Urban Areas 14,484 22
4 Rural Areas 5.375 56
5 Agriculture 5,427 16
Total 7,631 100
C)-Policies regarding waste water management:
As usual no national policies are implementing for the sustainable development of waste water management. Although government is trying to implement some important policies for cleaning purposes but all in vein. However, certain organizations are working on environmental friendly technologies to combat the water pollution. Several laws and regulations are under progress, but due to lack of access we are unable to implement these on national level.
Biggest challenge, we faced these days, is the negative aspects of waste water on human and natural ecosystem. Therefore, the environment international laws and regulations needs to implement on serious note.
• Organizations must do a corporative research and helps in the development of eco-friendly techniques.
• Organizations must established wastewater treatment plants and develop the national sanitation policy.
• There must be implementations of master plans for the treatment of industrial and domestic waste.
• Regular monitoring of the system is a mandatory part of the management system.
D)-Government and Management:
Challenges regarding management system must include institutional capacity and preferable funding capacity. The plan includes a large number of challenges and action for implementations. They formulate a legal framework to govern municipal local actions and forced an act called Local Government Act in 2013. Similarly they rise the funding for municipal treatment process and also work on its monitoring and evaluation.
