Climate change is a global challenge that affects everyone, especially vulnerable countries like Egypt. Egypt is taking action to adapt to climate change and reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. The government has launched the National Climate Change Strategy, which sets out a vision and a roadmap for a greener, more resilient, and more prosperous future. The strategy covers various sectors and themes, such as energy, water, agriculture, health, urban development, and disaster risk management. The strategy also aims to enhance the role of the private sector, civil society, and local communities in climate action.

Egypt is also developing the green finance market, which can mobilize funds for climate-friendly projects and initiatives. In 2022, Egypt issued the region's first sovereign green bond, worth US$750 million, to finance projects in clean transportation and sustainable water management. The bond attracted investors who are interested in both financial and environmental returns. The World Bank, a pioneer of green bonds, advised the Ministry of Finance and line ministries on this initiative.

As the host of COP27, the 27th Session of the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties, Egypt is also playing a leading role in coordinating global action on climate adaptation, mitigation, and finance. Egypt is working with other countries and stakeholders to reach a consensus on the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the enhancement of the global climate ambition. Egypt is also advocating for the needs and interests of developing countries, especially in Africa and the Arab region, which are among the most affected by climate change.

Climate change is a serious threat, but also an opportunity for transformation and innovation. Egypt is committed to addressing climate change and achieving sustainable development for the benefit of its people and the planet.

As a society, we need a strong and effective government that can implement and enforce policies and regulations that protect and restore nature. For example, the government can:

- Develop and implement a national strategy and action plan for biodiversity and ecosystem conservation, which can set clear goals, targets, and indicators for nature protection and restoration.

- Establish and manage a network of protected areas, which can conserve habitats, species, and ecosystem services.

- Promote and support green economy and green infrastructure, which can create jobs, reduce poverty, and enhance environmental quality.

- Implement and enforce environmental laws and standards, which can prevent and punish environmental crimes, such as illegal logging, poaching, and dumping.

- Integrate environmental considerations into all sectors and levels of decision making, which can ensure that environmental impacts are assessed and minimized.

- Cooperate and coordinate with other countries and international organizations, which can enhance regional and global cooperation and action on environmental issues.

Nature is our common heritage and our shared responsibility. We all depend on nature for our survival and well-being, and we all have a role to play in its protection and restoration. By taking individual and collective actions, we can make a difference for nature and ourselves. We can ensure that nature continues to provide us with its benefits and services, and that we leave a healthy and prosperous planet for our children and grandchildren.
