What are Biodiversity Hotspots?

The concept of biodiversity hotspots was first introduced by British ecologist Norman Myers in 1988. These regions are characterized by their extraordinary levels of species richness and endemism, referring to species that exist only within that specific area and are not found elsewhere. While covering just 2.3% of the Earth's land surface, these hotspots account for around 35% of all terrestrial plant species and 43% of all terrestrial vertebrate species.

To be designated as a biodiversity hotspot, an area must meet two main criteria: it must have at least 1,500 endemic plant species and it must have lost at least 70% of its original habitat. Presently, there are 36 recognized hotspots spread across the globe.

Encompassing parts of Southeast Asia, this hotspot includes regions like Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Papua New Guinea. Sundaland-Wallacea is famed for its staggering biodiversity, housing more than 25,000 plant species, 1,500 bird species, and countless other animals like orangutans, tigers, and pygmy elephants. The region is critically threatened by deforestation, logging, and poaching.

The Western Ghats and Sri Lanka Hotspot (India and Sri Lanka)

The Western Ghats, a mountain range running along the western coast of India, and the island nation of Sri Lanka together form a unique hotspot. This area boasts nearly 8,000 plant species, 325 species of mammals, and 1,000 species of birds. The Western Ghats are crucial for India's water supply and are recognized as one of the eight hottest hotspots in the world.

The Mediterranean Basin Hotspot (Southern Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East)

The Mediterranean Basin is known for its rich cultural history, but it also harbors a remarkable diversity of plant and animal species. This hotspot boasts over 22,500 plant species, 10% of which are found only in this region. Unsustainable agricultural practices, urbanization, and invasive species pose significant threats to its delicate ecosystems.
