THE MAASAI TRIBES OF KENYA AND TANZANIA

By Donnah ClaraPublished 2 years ago 3 min read

The Maasai tribe is found in East Africa, specifically in Kenya and Tanzania. The Maasai are a Nilotic and semi-nomadic ethnic group that has clung to their ancient traditions, resisting the influences of Western modernization. They are known for their distinctive dress codes and beautiful jewelry. The Maasai are believed to have migrated from northwestern Kenya, particularly around Lake Turkana, they started their journey in the 15th century. Today, they are settled in areas like southern Kenya and northern Tanzania, these are the regions where the Maasai can be found.

During their migration, the Maasai encountered various other tribes that had already settled in these regions. Some of these encounters led to conflicts and forced displacement, while others resulted in assimilation into Maasai culture. As of today, the Maasai population is estimated to be close to 2 million, spread across southern Kenya and northern Tanzania.

The Maasai men especially the old men, run everything around the society. It is they that determine how everything should be done in society. So in case of anything that has to be done in society, the men are actually to decide whether society should be ruled in a certain way or in some other kind of way. So it is the men who have absolute power over the women and the children in society. So it's a patriarchal culture.

The cattle are highly revered in Maasai culture and are considered a sacred gift from the gods. They are not only a source of sustenance but also a symbol of wealth and status. Cattle are often used in religious rituals and ceremonies. When someone has cattle they're taken as a very important person in the society. Cattle can be used to do things such as dowry payment and also in settling disagreements in a family or society.

Animal sacrifices are an integral part of Maasai religious practices. They are made to seek favor from their god, to purify the community, or to mark important life events, such as births, weddings, and funerals.

In the Maasai tradition, they have their highest god and that is Laibon they do respect him because he is responsible for giving the society powers such as if they want to rain in the area it's the Laibon that they pray to, and also if someone needs a healing. Also for prophecies, if one needs to determine what will happen in the future the laibon grants this in the Maasai culture. Generally, this is their religious leader who heads everything in the Maasai culture in terms of religion.

When it comes to their cultural food, the Maasai people heavily rely on cattle products. They are very good consumers of cow milk. They often consume it fresh, but they also make fermented milk products like yogurt and soured milk. Milk is a crucial source of nutrition and hydration for the Maasai people. They also consume raw blood! Maasai warriors are known for drinking fresh blood from cattle. This practice involves making a small incision in the cow's neck and collecting the blood in a gourd. It is mixed with milk and consumed. They say it's very nutritious for their bodies and that is the reason they do this. They also heavily rely on the meat from the cow and goat meat. They sometimes also consume sheep and poultry. Meat is typically roasted over an open fire or boiled in stews.

In addition to their livestock-based diet, the Maasai gather and eat wild plants which include leaves, roots, and fruits, to supplement their nutritional needs. Honey is another important food source for the Maasai. They are skilled beekeepers and collect honey from wild beehives. Honey is often used as a sweetener and for its medicinal properties. That’s such a healthy lifestyle, don't you think so?

They are known for their artistic body modifications of scars and body painting. These include elongating their ear lobes, lips, tongue, and other body parts. They usually make these modifications when someone is still at a young age, and this is normally done using thorns, twigs, or stones to create that pull effect on their bodies. As someone grows they grow with these modifications as well. Scars and body painting are important elements of Maasai adornment. Scarring patterns signify tribal identity or coming-of-age rituals. their body painting is often used for decoration during dances and ceremonies.

They are also known for their very artistic Jewelry. These include beaded, necklaces, beaded earrings, beaded bracelets, beaded belts, metal jewelry, cowrie shells, including many others. Maasai women often wear beaded earrings, which can be quite large and elaborate. Like necklaces, earrings are made with a variety of bead colors and patterns. Beaded necklaces are perhaps the most iconic Maasai ornament. They are made using colorful glass beads and can vary in design and complexity. Each color of bead may have a specific symbolic meaning, these are worn by both men and women.

What an amazing, and strong culture!!
