1. The Remarkable Recovery of the Green Sea Turtle

The green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas), endangered since the 1980s, has made an incredible comeback. Thanks to dedicated efforts like protecting nesting sites and reducing bycatch in fishing nets, this iconic species has been downgraded to "least concern" on the IUCN Red List. It's a testament to how targeted conservation can reverse decades of decline.

2. The Ampurta Marsupial's Surprising Expansion

This little Marsupial was almost extinct but recovered totally !

Once teetering on the brink, the ampurta (Dasycercus hillieri), a small Australian marsupial about the size of a rat, has expanded its territory by over 48,000 square kilometers between 2015 and 2021 - even amid droughts and food scarcity. This shift to "least concern" status showcases nature's adaptability and the success of habitat protection initiatives.

3. A Historic Milestone: The UN High Seas Treaty

In September 2025, over 60 countries ratified the United Nations High Seas Treaty, marking a groundbreaking step for marine conservation. Set to take effect in January 2026, it aims to protect biodiversity in international waters and safeguard at least 30% of global oceans and lands. This international collaboration is a beacon of hope for preserving our planet's vast, unregulated seas.

4. The Ozone Hole Continues to Shrink

The Antarctic ozone hole reached its smallest size since 2019, signaling ongoing recovery from the damage caused by chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). The 1987 Montreal Protocol's ban on these substances has paid off, with the hole steadily decreasing. If we keep pushing for eco-friendly alternatives, full recovery is projected by the late 2060s - a clear win for global environmental policy.

5. Breakthrough in Gene Therapy for Huntington's Disease

2025 was a landmark year for gene editing, with the first gene therapy for Huntington's disease slowing cognitive decline by an impressive 75% in trial participants. This innovative approach, alongside other successes like tailored CRISPR treatments and therapies for rare immune disorders like chronic granulomatous disease, demonstrates the power of academia-industry partnerships in tackling rare diseases.

6. Advances in Gene Therapy for Leukaemia

Another gene-editing triumph: a base-editing CAR-T cell therapy sent most participants with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia into remission. This builds on other 2025 milestones, including corrections for mutations causing lung and liver damage. Experts hail this as a breakthrough era, paving the way for personalized treatments for previously untreatable conditions.

7. The Global Surge in Renewable Energy

Renewables overtook coal for the first time as the world's top energy source, driven by China's milestone of installing over 1 terawatt of solar capacity. In just the first half of 2025, China added 256 gigawatts - double the global total elsewhere. With projections for massive growth through 2030 and half of Europe's electricity from renewables, this shift offers real hope amid rising emissions.

Other Scientific Triumphs of 2025

Space Exploration Advances

NASA achieved a "Golden Age" with two robotic Moon landings, the ESCAPADE mission to Mars, and the International Space Station's 25th anniversary of continuous habitation. The Artemis Accords expanded to 59 nations, fostering global cooperation. Private efforts shone too, with successful lunar payloads and reusable rocket tests paving the way for sustainable exploration.

Physics and Astronomy Milestones

Gravitational wave detectors made history with the detection of the most massive black hole merger ever observed, yielding a final object over 225 solar masses and challenging formation models. Physics World highlighted breakthroughs like creating two-dimensional metals, molecular superfluids, and advanced quantum sensors. Researchers also imaged key mitochondrial proteins via cryo-electron microscopy, advancing Parkinson's understanding, and engineered ultra-efficient AI chips for medical imaging.

Quantum Leap Forward

Declared the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, 2025 saw major strides: Microsoft's topological qubits in the Majorana 1 chip, record-low error rates, and commercial roadmaps from IBM, Google, and others. Quantum networks advanced with ground-to-satellite signals, promising secure global communication.

Materials and Emerging Tech

Innovations included biodegradable plastics from agricultural waste, self-healing materials, and efficient batteries. These, plus progress in multi-omics for drug discovery, underscored science's role in sustainable solutions.

Artificial Intelligence

2025 marked a pivotal year for artificial intelligence, shifting from hype-driven generative tools to more sophisticated systems focused on reasoning, autonomy, and practical applications. A defining trend was the emergence of AI agents — systems that go beyond responding to queries by autonomously executing complex tasks. Microsoft, OpenAI, and others highlighted agents transforming workplaces, from handling workflows to decision-making.

AI shone in medicine: University of Michigan's model diagnosed hard-to-detect heart conditions from EKGs, while AI-designed molecules enhanced pancreatic cancer treatments. Drug discovery accelerated, with AI aiding protein folding legacies from prior years.
