Smokey the Bear (pexels.com)

Who remembers all the commercials back in the 1970's about stopping forest fires and stopping all sorts of pollution? There were a lot of them especially on Saturday mornings. When I was much younger and watching Saturday morning cartoons there were always these characters from a Native American Indian, I think, his name was 'Iron Eyes Cody' I'm not sure of his tribe though, but the commercial always showed him walking through the woods admiring nature, then having approached a highway and walking through trash and seeing a car drive by and the people just throwing their trash out the car window the camera pans back to him with a close-up of him with a tear running down his cheek.

Indian (pexels.com)

This is not the Indian chief from the commercial, but it does kind of look like him though. My lesson from that commercial on I seem to always pick up trash when I seeing flying around. Next, there are two characters that are real but made up for kids to recognize.

These two characters are Smokey the Bear "Only you can prevent forest fires." and the other saying from Woodsey Owl "Give a Hoot, Don't Pollute!". For Smokey I remember they would share his life as a cub for surviving a forest fire with a fireman holding him, then showing Smokey as he is in the picture minus the girl doll beside the Smokey figure (that was the only image I could find of Smokey) they would have him saying holding a shovel his signature line. Moving on to Woodsey Owl and giving a hoot to stopping pollution of all kinds from noise, water and land. He would be followed by a group of kids cleaning up litter as they learned how to stop and even begin to recycle. I believe from these commercials was careful of campfires and even burning trash as well as later joining a recycling club in high school where we collected old newspapers, cans, bottles, etc. as well as participating in roadside cleanups several times.

coffee beans and owl (pexels.com)

This is the only image of a plastic owl figurine that even looks close like a Woodsey Owl, who knows could have like coffee beans and muffins. The eyes were right if I remember right just wish this one had glasses like Woodsey did. So, remember if want the following: Only you can prevent forest fires and give a hoot, don't pollute!
