‘The Rape Culture’ might sound exaggerated but yes that's what is happening in India. You just open any newspaper or any social media and you get news in front of you about rape that happened yesterday, the day before yesterday, or any kind of data that blows your mind and makes you numb.
Definitely, we got independence from the Britishers, but do we have really achieved freedom in a true sense? What kind of freedom do we have where our mothers, sisters, wives, and daughters feel insecure on roads, at workplaces, in school even in their own homes itself? Do our freedom fighters fought and gave their blood for this freedom? We need to give thought to it, the government needs to think about it every stakeholder in this nation needs to think about it.
We never think about it, that after 78 years of independence why our society is still like this? Where we made mistakes? Where we are lacking in shaping a good society? We need to examine ourselves, we need to examine our laws and implementation agencies before getting too late and the situation out of control.
Are girls and women responsible for all this? Do men are innocent at all? Is this the right way to think? Do really small clothes matter? This and many more wrong understandings of intellectually bankrupt minds who consider women responsible for what happens to them need to be changed. They need to understand that if only small clothes are the reason for rapes then why do little girls and old women get rapped? And if going out late at night is the reason for rapes then why do rapes happen in days? The point is, the reason for rape is the corrupt mind of the rapist and not the small clothes of women. That is what needs to be changed.
We need to start with the education system, basic sex education must be given to students in school, and the good and bad touch must be taught to children. The syllabus should be remolded and values of respecting women, and defending them when needed must be included. Boys must taught at home to respect women. Laws should made more stringent and their implementation must be made strict. Fast-track courts must be established to run the cases including the charges of rape and the time limit for investigation of the case must be decided by law. The transparency and accountability of implementing agencies should be checked by respective authorities.
After the Nirbhaya case of 2012, we all hoped that no other Nirbhaya would be there, but the reality is very brutal. On average 87 to 89 women get raped every day in India. India is moving towards becoming a VISHVAGURU and superpower and developed nation by 2047 as our respected Prime Minister said. Women are the untapped potential for the development of a nation in every sector. We need to understand this.
As the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi said, ‘The day a woman can walk freely on the roads at night, that day we can say that India has achieved independence’, we all want to see this Independent India.
