Mattress Firm

Commercial Critique

By Clifford KincaidPublished 6 months ago 2 min read

Mattress Firm's "All Night Long" advertising campaign highlights what most of us have come to already know…People can suck! These commercials showcase the self-centered and self-serving society we have become. I do not blame or hold Lionel Richie responsible for the use of his song in these series of commercials. If anything he should take the fall for "The Simple Life" with his daughter and Paris Hilton.

Yes, the commercials are intended for entertainment value and to sell you a mattress. This review is of their commercials and not an attack on their quality mattresses. I would argue that in real world settings, these incidents could lead to violence and even death. Take for example the lady in the car cutting off people in traffic and impeding an ambulance. We know from our everyday life that road rage is no joke and it is only getting worse. Bitch could have been shot and then she really would have been sleeping all night long.

Lets not forget about the guy doing the double dipping in the guac and licking off his fingers. For one, that is just down right disgusting, almost criminal. And two, dude should know better unless he is on the spectrum, then he gets a free pass. I do not think this commercial was going for this particular type of diversity. I do think they did a great job casting the antagonist in the commercial's, right down to the way they walk and shuffle in to the mattress store.

I must admit, I did find the "Nana" one quite amusing. Nothing like finding out grandma is a dirty old girl that is a professional cat fisher. That one I do not feel too bad about since the victims are more than likely perverts. If there is a victim in this, it has to be the grandson. When Nana tells him she sleeps hot, the expression on his face is priceless. Good times at Nana's.

Now lets just imagine that you are trapped in a plane with the guy that decides to go full Monty with his feet. If anyone has experienced air travel lately, I do not believe the stewardess would react so kindly. Or imagine the male steward being turned loose on this guy. Again, this could lead to a full-blown brawl at 30,000 feet - and maybe even a bonus case of athlete's foot.

To round out my shamming of this add campaign, lets look at the basketball mom. As if youth sporting events are not contentious enough. Then add in this poor sport mom. Can you imagine the reaction from one of the man children in the crowd that is living vicariously through his son? It would definitely make the evening news and possibly bruise some egos.

I personally don't have a problem with the product - it's the delivery in this particular ad campaign that rubs me wrong. At first, the commercials seem innocent enough, even good for a laugh. But once you dig into the message and the way it's delivered, you start to realize just how shitty we've become to one another as a society. That this kind of behavior is portrayed as normal - or that we subconsciously expect to run into someone like this - says a lot more about us than the ad ever intended. And honestly, after watching enough of them, you won't be sleeping all night long either.
