Kalonzo Musyoka Criticizes President Ruto Over Controversial Adani Deal

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has once again criticized the Kenya Kwanza government, accusing it of having hidden motives in the controversial Adani deal to take over operations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

Speaking during a church service at St. Paul ACK Nyathuna in Kabete Town, Kalonzo voiced strong opposition to the deal, alleging the government was involved in secretive, underhanded dealings.

"How can we just sell our international airport like that?" he questioned. "Among all the scandals this country has faced, the Adani deal is shocking."

He further criticized the government for moving forward without consulting the public, Parliament, or the Senate, urging Kenyans to reject the deal.

Public Participation Ignored

Kalonzo, a former Vice President, condemned the lack of public involvement in the deal. Echoing his views, former Defence Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa, also a vocal critic, added that the Adani group has been rejected in countries like Australia, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, where protests broke out against the company.

Kalonzo's criticism comes as he intensifies his political activities in preparation for a 2027 presidential bid. His political maneuvers have grown more assertive since Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga announced his plans to run for the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairmanship. Although Odinga's relationship with President Ruto has improved, Kalonzo remains firm in his opposition, vowing to challenge Ruto in 2027.

Public Outrage Over Adani Deal

The Kenyan public has reacted strongly to the government's decision to enter into a 30-year concession agreement with Adani Airport Holdings to upgrade JKIA. Despite reassurances that Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) employees would be retained, the deal has sparked widespread criticism.

Adani plans to invest over Ksh96.6 billion to construct a second runway, a new passenger terminal, and other facilities at JKIA. Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura previously stated that the partnership was essential to modernize the airport, especially as passenger numbers surged from 7.5 million to 8.6 million last year.
