Dead Tide Movie Review
When silence becomes dangerous, truth is your only weapon

Dead Tide is a Nigerian action-thriller directed by Soji Ogunnaike. It tells the story of Itoro, a former militant who has tried to leave violence and anger behind after losing his sister. He now runs a beach bar in Badagry.
One day, Sade, a social media influencer with a speech defect, accidentally records a murder by Dare, the president’s son. When Dare’s people try to silence her, Sade runs and finds shelter with Itoro. Together, they must escape danger and deliver the evidence to those who can expose the truth.
What Works Well
Strong Premise & Tension
The idea of a peaceful man pulled back into conflict after discovering corruption is compelling. The viral video plot brings urgency and real stakes.
Atmospheric Setting
Coastal Badagry, the beach bar, shadows, ambushes — these create vivid mood. There is a contrast between quiet moments by the sea and sudden threats.
Character Conflict & Growth
Itoro’s past and his desire for peace versus the need for justice give him depth. Sade’s vulnerability and strength also add layers.
Good Action Scenes
Chases, hideouts, confrontations — the action feels dangerous, not just stylized. These scenes are well-shot and help the story move forward.
Social Messages
Themes like corruption, the misuse of power, and the risks of speaking truth are strong. The speech defect adds realism and shows that bravery comes in many forms.
What Could Be Better
Pacing in the Middle
Some scenes slow down too much, especially when exploring motivations. The film loses some momentum in the middle parts.
Predictable Moments
Some plot twists are easy to guess, especially for viewers familiar with this genre (betrayal, escape, confrontation).
Supporting Characters Underdeveloped
Many side characters lack full back-stories or clear motives. Their actions sometimes feel sudden or unjustified.
Sudden Shifts Between Emotion and Action
Moving from calm emotional scenes to intense action can feel abrupt. Smoother transitions might deepen impact.
Overall Feel & Impact
Dead Tide works well as an action thriller. It has tension, good visuals, real threats, and characters you can care about. It also speaks to issues that matter in society today.
While it doesn’t always break new ground, its ambition and execution make it stand out among recent Nollywood offerings in this genre.
