Delivery services, more often than not, are faceless operations. Contact is made via encrypted text with a person you have not met. Most times you can’t even call them.

New Yorkers of all ages are familiar with the process: You send a text, they respond, “One hour,” and then you wait like three; thinking, all the while, that they’ve maybe just forgotten.

And while the process, we know, can be maddening, it is nevertheless a process we have been conditioned to endure. For so long, this was a case of necessity. But I believe that time is over.

A couple months back, I went online to find a new delivery service. I had been through maybe ten over the past two years, and I was becoming jaded to the process. On that day, however, I came across CannAmazon. Unlike so many of the lurid, ad-ridden websites I’d visited before, this one wahos clean and simple. The contact information was easy to find, so I called, and was greeted by a man’s voice. The voice was warm and well-intentioned, the voice of man who will laugh at any joke you tell, no matter how bad, without even raising an eyebrow, or smiling slightly, or winking. I gave him my address, he said 45 minutes, and so began the process.

To my surprise, he showed up not 30 minutes later. He was professional and kind. I asked him a number of questions about the varieties of flower, and he told me they had even more options at their physical store, Studio Green.

Being from California, I was skeptical of a NYC dispensary. It is no secret that for designers in the cannabis retail space, it is difficult to keep up with rules that are constantly changing. Another common regulatory challenge is that some regions don’t allow cannabis products to be visible from the street. New York is one of those regions. In addition, west coast dispensaries had a decade long head-start, with respect to ironing out regulatory and design kinks.

My expectations, you might expect, were low. But what I found was something else: Studio Green had the feel of a high-end boutique or a fancy cocktail lounge, stripped of the associations so long held by dispensaries, and the cannabis industry at large. Chief among these associations are secrecy: Dispensaries, most often, have an approach completely antithetical to playfulness and color. Products are so often hidden in the back of drawer, out of sight. But this was not the case at Studio Green, where, front and center, I was shown a shimmering display of colorfully packaged flower, pre-rolls, edibles, gummies, chocolate CBD, lotions, etc...a smorgasbord vibrant enough to give Wonka a run for his money. In other words, it didn’t feel like a dispensary. The dark, masculine colors so prominent elsewhere were absent, replaced by bright, open, elevated space—a signal to consumers, or at least to myself, that this place was no different than a candy shop. You were supposed to look, learn, and ask questions about the product. The idea behind the setup, I can only imagine, was to make people comfortable and spark their curiosity, inspiring them to open up about what they’re looking for.

Fun, as it always should’ve been, is placed at the forefront of Studio Green’s mission statement. One of those rare dispensaries which makes you realize that weed doesn’t have to be ugly. A place you can go to cop bud, or just smoke and relax with your friends!

Safe to say, I have been using exclusively CannAmazon and Studio Green for my cannabis consumption ever after.
