1. The Axe Family Murders

In May of 1929, in the town of Villisca, Iowa, the Moore family was brutally murdered in their home with an axe. The family consisted of Josiah and Sarah Moore, their four children–Herman, Katherine, Boyd, and Paul–and two young girls who were staying with them, Ina Mae and Lena Gawne.

All eight people in the house were bludgeoned to death with an axe while they slept, and the only clues left behind were a few bloody handprints on a bedpost and mirror. The murders remained unsolved for nearly 90 years, until 2009 when a man named Henry Lee Lucas confessed to the killings (though his confession was later deemed false).

To this day, the case remains unsolved and many believe that the true killer is still out there.

2. The White family murders

In 1909, near Maryville, Missouri, the White family was brutally murdered in their farmhouse. The family consisted of husband and wife George and Susie White, their four children–Pearl, Myrtle, May, and Lillie–and Susie’s sister Della Brooks.

All seven people in the house were shot to death with a shotgun, and the only clues left behind were a few spent shell casings. The case remained unsolved for over 100 years until it was finally solved by cold case detectives in 2011.

The killer turned out to be Susie White’s brother-in-law Jesse Brooks, who had come to visit the family the day of the murders but left abruptly after an argument with George White. It is believed that Brooks came back later that night and killed the entire family in revenge.

3. The Bergmann family murders

In July of 1911, in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, the Bergmann family was brutally murdered in their home. The family consisted of husband and wife Jacob and Augusta Bergmann, their three children–Albert, Emma, and Bertha–and Augusta’s sister Gertrude Weiler.

All six people in the house were stabbed to death with a knife, and the only clues left behind were a few bloody footprints leading away from the house. The murders remained unsolved for over 100 years until they were finally solved by cold case detectives in 2013.

The killer turned out to be Augusta Bergmann’s lover Carl Schaefer, who had come to visit the family the day of the murders but left abruptly after an argument with Jacob Bergmann. It is believed that Schaefer came back later that night and killed the entire family in revenge.

4. The Bremer family murders

In September of 1921, in Omaha, Nebraska, Edward Bremer was kidnapped for ransom by a group of men led by notorious gangster John Dillinger. Bremer’s father William paid the ransom money but Dillinger and his men double-crossed him and killed both Edward and William Bremer. They also killed William’s maid Emma Catheryn Woelfer for good measure.

The three bodies were found shot to death in a ditch near Omaha just a few days later. Dillinger and his men were never caught or brought to justice for their crimes.

5. The Collier family murders

In December of 1887, near Ocilla, Georgia, five members of the Collier family were brutally murdered in their home with an axe. The victims included father Absolom Collier Sr., mother Rebecca Collier nee Watkins, son Absolom Jr., daughter Martha Ann “Mattie” Collier Jones nee Watkins ,and granddaughter Bertha Bell “Bertie” Watkins .

All five victims were either decapitated or had their throats slashed open with an axe; Mattie Collier Jones’ infant daughter Nora was found unharmed in her crib upstairs. It is believed that theColliers were killed by members of a rival family over a disputed piece of property .The case remains unsolved to this day.

6.. The Dardeen family murders

In November of 1987 ,in West Frankfort ,Illinois ,the Dardeen family was brutally murdered in their home .The victims included father Keith Dardeen ,mother Elaine Dardeen nee Jeffery ,and sons Peter Robert Dardeen 、Keith Ryan Dardeen .All four victims were either shot or beaten to death with a baseball bat ;Elaine Dardeen was also raped .It is believed that the Dardeens were killed by 17-year-old Joey Warren ,who was arrested tried ,and convicted of the murders .However ,Warren has always maintained his innocence ,and many believe that he was wrongfully convicted .

In October of 2002 ,in Kenner ,Louisiana ,the Hair family was brutally murdered in their home .The victims included father Sean Hilliard Hair Sr.,mother Katherine Hair nee Fernandez ,and sons Sean Hilliard Hair Jr., Stephen Neil Hair . All four victims were shot to death execution-style ; Katherine Hair was also sexually assaulted post-mortem . It is believed that Sean Hair Sr .was killed by his mistress Lissette Martinez ,who then enlisted the help of her brothers Gabriel and Nelson Martinez to kill Sean Hair Jr., Stephen Hair ,and Katherine Hair . All three Martinez siblings were arrested tried ,and convicted of the murders .

8. The O'Connell family murders

The 15th anniversary of one of Hudson's worst days was observed on Sunday. Businessman Dan O'Connell, a native of Hudson, was discovered shot to death in his office at the O'Connell Family Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 5, 2002. James Ellison, a University of Minnesota intern working at O'Connell's, was also murdered. Ellison, from Barron, was 22 years old; O'Connell was only 39. The Hudson Police Department's first focus was the crime from the moment it was found because it horrified the neighbourhood. Before the family and the town learned who had done it and why, it would be another three years.

Dan's wife Jennie, his young children Kyle and Kaitlyn, his parents Tom and Janet, his siblings and their families, including his brothers Mike and Tom Jr., sister Kathy, and the Ellison family, were left in the dark about what had transpired. The case suddenly fell cold after some early leads. Marty Jensen, the current chief of the Hudson Police Department, was assigned the role of HPD's media liaison while still a sergeant. It was his first time working on a notorious murder case. 24 years after JonBenét Ramsey was brutally murdered, her family is still dealing with the effects of her loss in their daily life.

John Andrew Ramsey, JonBenét's half-brother, claimed that the day after Christmas, when he learned that she was gone, he was preparing to travel to Michigan to meet his father's family, which included JonBenét. As he prepared to depart from Atlanta, where he was spending the holidays with his mother and sister, he was already aboard the aircraft.

Despite the fact that the DNA in JonBenét's underwear and fingernails did not match any members of the Ramsey family, the authorities did not immediately make that information public. Years later, the authorities finally exonerated the family.
