Niki Caro is the director of the 2023 American action thriller film The Mother, which is based on a tale by Misha Green and written by Andrea Berloff, Peter Craig, and Misha Green. Starring in the movie are Paul Raci, Gael García Bernal, Omari Hardwick, Joseph Fiennes, Lucy Paez, and Jennifer Lopez. The story revolves around Lopez, a former US army operative, who teams up with an FBI agent to free her adolescent daughter who has been abducted by criminals. Netflix launched The Mother on May 12, 2023.

An arms smuggling agreement between arms dealer Hector Álvarez and ex-SAS Captain Adrian Lovell is facilitated by an unidentified U.S. military operative dubbed "the Mother". She becomes romantically engaged with both of them and eventually becomes pregnant. The Mother approaches the FBI to become an informant after learning that they are involved in child trafficking.William Cruise, an FBI Special agent, is questioning the Mother at a safe house when Lovell attacks the place; Cruise is shot and hurt, and the other FBI officers are slain. Cruise is spared death by The Mother, who also creates a time-delayed explosive. Before being knocked unconscious and burned by the explosion, Lovell confronts her in the bathroom and stabs her in the womb. A girl is born prematurely to the mother in the hospital after the experience.

SAIC The mother is informed by Eleanor Williams that her newborn daughter will be put with a foster home for protection and that Lovell's body has gone missing. Knowing that the child will never be secure in her care, she angrily renounces her parental rights. When Cruise's mother visits, she gives him three instructions:The child will lead as normal a life as possible, receive a picture on her birthday each year, and be contacted if she is in danger. With the assistance of Jons, a former army buddy, the Mother then relocates to a secluded cabin in Alaska.

A decade and a half later, Cruise invites her to a meeting in Ohio. He tells her that the ATF may be onto The Mother because they discovered a picture of her daughter, Zoe, when they arrested some of Álvarez's men in Mexico. Zoe is abducted by Álvarez's men as she is being watched by Cruise and the Mother at a park. Before the Mother and Cruise get away from the police, she is able to shoot multiple of them. Even though she understands the kidnapping was done to get Zoe out of hiding, he believes it was done for ransom.

They travel to Havana, Cuba in the hopes of finding information on Zoe's location. They apprehend Tarantula, Álvarez's subordinate, who confesses to being detained at Álvarez's home on "the Plantation" when questioned. They break into his well guarded house and bring Zoe to safety. Álvarez is then killed by the Mother.

The Mother's look upon Zoe as she is being escorted back home makes Zoe realise that she is her biological mother. In order to let Cruise send her to her foster parents, the Mother chooses to split ways. Though Lovell is able to stop them, the Mother shows up and flees with Zoe. Lovell murders Cruise after becoming angry.

When the Mother realises Zoe won't be safe going home, she brings her to the cabin. She gradually imparts knowledge of small arms training, self-defense, and survival techniques to the reluctant girl. They become close, but the Mother leaves Zoe with Jons when she finds out that Lovell and some mercenaries are heading their way. Shocked to learn that her mother is leaving her again, Zoe approaches Jons, who implores her to judge the Mother by her deeds rather than her words. Zoe chooses to go back to the cabin and assist her mother in defending herself from the intruders after discovering a letter from the Mother in which she states that everything she has ever done has been for her.

The two are faced in the last encounter by Lovell and his troops. Before confronting Lovell, the Mother kills every one of his men. Lovell snatches Zoe and flees after knocking her out in a hand-to-hand battle, but the Mother snipes and kills him first. The Mother gives Zoe back to her adoptive family after her previous criminal associates have been killed. She can now watch Zoe from a distance since she is no longer required to hide.
