Six-year-old JonBenét Ramsey made national headlines when she was found murdered in her family home in Colorado in December 1996. Her case remains unsolved to this day.

BACKGROUND

JonBenét Ramsey was born on August 6, 1990, in Atlanta, Georgia. She was the second child of her parents, John and Patsy Ramsey. JonBenét loved the spotlight and had already won several child beauty pageants. Her mother, who had also participated in such competitions regularly, passed on her passion. Her father, a businessman, provided the family with a comfortable life.

MURDER

On the morning of December 26, 1996, Patsy Ramsey called the police after finding a ransom note demanding $118,000 for the safe return of her daughter. However, the money was never needed as JonBenét's lifeless body was discovered the same day, hidden under a blanket in the basement. She had been murdered on December 25, the day before. The cause of death was asphyxiation due to strangulation combined with a skull fracture. The crime soon became a national sensation.

JonBenét, who had been physically abused and strangled, was found with duct tape over her mouth and her hands tied together. There were also indications of sexual assault. The Boulder officers made crucial mistakes in securing the crime scene, allowing John Ramsey to remove his daughter's body from the scene. During the initial questioning, the parents were not separated for interrogation.

INVESTIGATION

Since there were no signs of an intruder, suspicion quickly fell on JonBenét's parents. The ransom note seemed suspicious to authorities. The oddly specific amount - $118,000 - matched exactly the bonus John Ramsey received from his employer. Additionally, the note was written on paper that was also found in the Ramseys' house. The note also appeared unusually verbose.

The fact that John and Patsy Ramsey did not cooperate with the investigation fueled public speculation about their guilt. Furthermore, JonBenét's active participation in beauty pageants, where she had to wear noticeable makeup and sometimes revealing clothing, was generally considered inappropriate.

JonBenét's nine-year-old brother, Burke, who was present at the time of her death, was soon ruled out as a suspect. However, there were ongoing speculations that he might have been involved in his sister's murder.

SPECULATIONS

The investigation into JonBenét's murder lasted over two years. In October 1999, the evidence presented to the grand jury in the case was ultimately dismissed without a recommendation for indictment.

In 2006, former elementary school teacher John Mark Karr was arrested after confessing to the murder; however, Karr's DNA did not match samples found on JonBenét's body, and he was released. In 2008, further DNA analysis led to the exclusion of JonBenét's parents as the perpetrators.

In 2016, when forensic pathologist Werner Spitz implicated Burke Ramsey in JonBenét's death, Burke filed a lawsuit against him. However, the lawsuit was ultimately settled out of court.

The case remains one of the most well-known cold cases to this day.
