The Abduction of Angela Hammond: A Chilling Unsolved Mystery

A Missouri woman was abducted while speaking to her fiancé on a payphone; she remains missing.

On a quiet night in Clinton, Missouri, in 1991, 20-year-old Angela Hammond disappeared under circumstances so bizarre and tragic that they continue to haunt her family, her fiancé, and the small community she called home. More than three decades later, Angela’s case remains unsolved, a mystery that feels like a puzzle missing its final pieces.

Angela Hammond was a bright, outgoing young woman with her whole life ahead of her. She was a student and worked part-time at a local bank, saving money to support herself and her fiancé, Rob Shafer. The two were deeply in love, eagerly anticipating the birth of their first child, and planning their wedding for later that year. Life seemed full of promise for Angela — until it all came crashing down on April 4, 1991.

That night, Angela and Rob attended a barbecue together. Afterward, Angela dropped Rob off at his house so he could rest before an early shift at work the next day. Angela planned to return home but decided to stop at a payphone near downtown Clinton to call Rob around 11:15 PM. They chatted for about 30 minutes, discussing their plans for the future and Angela’s day. She mentioned noticing a strange man circling the parking lot in an older-model green Ford truck. The man, she said, had parked nearby and seemed to be searching for something with a flashlight.

Initially, Angela and Rob brushed off the man’s presence as odd but harmless. As the conversation continued, though, Angela became increasingly uneasy. She described how the man approached her payphone, briefly asked if she needed to use the phone, and then walked back to his truck. Moments later, Angela let out a scream, and the phone line went dead.

Rob, in a panic, jumped into his car and sped toward the payphone. On the way, he passed an older green Ford truck speeding in the opposite direction. Inside, he glimpsed Angela struggling with a man. Rob quickly made a U-turn and tried to chase the vehicle, but his car’s transmission failed, leaving him stranded on the side of the road as Angela was driven away. It was the last time anyone saw her.

The investigation that followed was extensive, but leads were frustratingly scarce. Rob’s account of the events that night was consistent, and he was quickly ruled out as a suspect. Witnesses confirmed seeing a green Ford truck near the payphone, but no one could identify the driver. The vehicle’s description — a 1960s or 1970s model pickup with a fish decal in the back window — was circulated widely, but no definitive matches were ever found.

Despite law enforcement’s best efforts, Angela’s abduction seemed to defy explanation. There were no obvious suspects, no motive, and no evidence suggesting why Angela had been targeted. Some speculated it was a random act of violence, while others wondered if someone she knew was involved. Yet none of these theories ever led to a breakthrough.

Over the years, Angela’s case has attracted its share of theories and speculation. One theory suggested her abduction might be connected to two other unsolved disappearances in Missouri during the early 1990s: Trudy Darby, a store clerk abducted and murdered in 1991, and Cheryl Ann Kenney, who vanished in 1991 after leaving her job. The three cases shared eerie similarities — young women abducted from small towns under mysterious circumstances. However, no concrete evidence has ever linked the cases.

For Angela’s family, her disappearance remains an open wound. Rob Shafer, once a hopeful young man dreaming of a life with Angela, has spoken publicly about his lingering guilt over not being able to save her. Angela’s mother, Marsha Cook, has worked tirelessly to keep her daughter’s story in the public eye, hoping that someday, someone will come forward with the information needed to bring her home.

The case remains active, with Clinton police and other agencies periodically revisiting leads. Advances in forensic technology have renewed hope in similar cold cases, but Angela’s abduction remains as perplexing as it was on that spring night in 1991.

Angela Hammond’s story is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly life can change, how a single moment can shatter a family’s sense of safety and security. Her loved ones continue to hope for answers, clinging to the possibility that justice will someday be served and Angela’s fate finally uncovered. Until then, her disappearance remains one of Missouri’s most haunting mysteries.
