Sin Behind the Sanctum: The Murder of Karuganti Apsara

A temple priest, a secret affair, and a murder that shocked Hyderabad

By Salar KhanPublished 8 months ago 3 min read

In the shadowed corridors of faith and devotion, where incense smoke curls upward in silent prayer, few would expect betrayal, violence, or murder. But on May 3, 2023, Hyderabad woke to a chilling truth that shattered the sanctity of a temple and exposed a love story that ended in blood.

Karuganti Apsara, a 30-year-old woman with dreams of a better life, vanished without a trace. Her last known contact was with Ayyagari Sai Krishna—a 36-year-old priest who not only presided over the temple’s rituals but also held a secret relationship with her. Their affair, as it later emerged, had been ongoing for over two years. Apsara, unaware—or perhaps too trusting—believed she had a future with the man she loved. She pressed him to take their bond to the next step: marriage.

But there was one tragic catch. Sai Krishna was already married and the father of two children.

Caught between his familial obligations and the growing emotional demands of his lover, Sai Krishna began to feel cornered. What could have been an honest confession or even a painful breakup turned into a calculated act of murder. And the most horrifying part? He planned it.

A Disappearance Wrapped in Lies

Initially, Sai Krishna played the role of a concerned friend. He filed a missing person's report, claiming he had dropped Apsara at a bus stop in Gachibowli and that she had become unresponsive afterward. The story seemed shallow but plausible—until police began digging deeper.

Investigators collected CCTV footage from the area and quickly noticed something strange: Apsara was never seen at the bus stand. Moreover, the timelines provided by Krishna didn’t align with the video evidence. There were gaps in his movements, hours he couldn’t account for.

His anxious behavior, coupled with inconsistencies in his narrative, raised red flags. Police began questioning him more intensely. It didn’t take long before the facade cracked, and what spilled out was a confession drenched in premeditation.

A Murder Most Foul

According to Sai Krishna’s own confession, the murder was not a moment of impulse. He had done his research. Days before the crime, he had scoured Google for ways to commit murder and methods to speed up the decomposition of a body. His weapon of choice: an iron rod.

On that fateful day, May 3rd, he lured Apsara to the temple where he worked—a place she likely trusted. There, he struck her on the head with the rod, killing her instantly. He then dragged her lifeless body and dumped it into a nearby manhole, mere steps from the temple grounds. It was a gruesome act cloaked in cowardice.

When questioned why he did it, Krishna cited the pressure she placed on him to get married. Rather than confronting the consequences of his dual life, he chose to erase her from existence.

Aftermath and Reflection

The murder of Karuganti Apsara was not just the loss of a life—it was the betrayal of trust, both personal and spiritual. For many in the community, the idea that a man tasked with leading religious rituals could carry such darkness within him was deeply disturbing.

Sai Krishna has been arrested and now faces serious charges, including murder and destruction of evidence. The case shocked Hyderabad, sparking conversations about domestic relationships, emotional manipulation, and how appearances can be deceiving.

Apsara’s story serves as a grim reminder: love, when mingled with secrecy and desperation, can spiral into horror. In a world where women often place their trust in partners who promise them futures, her story is both heartbreaking and cautionary.

As the legal system now takes its course, one can only hope that justice for Apsara brings peace to her grieving family. And perhaps, somewhere down the line, it may also serve as a deterrent to those who think silence or death can ever be a solution to emotional entanglements.

Rest in peace, Apsara. The world now knows your name—not as a mere victim, but as a woman who deserved love, truth, and above all, life.
