Shadows Beneath the Lake

When friendship hides secrets deeper than the water itself..

By Ghanni malikPublished 3 months ago 4 min read

The night was silent except for the soft ripples of Moonlake — a quiet lake at the edge of town. The air was cool, and the moonlight shimmered like silver glass.

Two friends stood there — Daniel and Ethan. They had been best friends since childhood. Daniel was gentle, honest, and kind. He loved helping others, even if it meant hurting himself. Ethan, on the other hand, had a charm that hid his greed and jealousy. He wanted everything Daniel had — respect, love, and peace.

They grew up together, studied together, and even started a small business together. But as time passed, Ethan began to feel like he was living in Daniel’s shadow.

Everyone praised Daniel for his sincerity.

Everyone trusted him.

And Ethan couldn’t stand that anymore.

The Beginning of the Rift

One summer evening, Daniel told Ethan about something exciting.

“I found a piece of land near Moonlake,” Daniel said, smiling. “We can build our dream cabin there. Just you and me, like we always talked about.”

Ethan smiled back — but inside, a dark thought crossed his mind.

That land wasn’t just beautiful; it was rumored to have hidden treasure buried during the old war. Ethan had heard about it from a local fisherman months ago.

He decided not to tell Daniel.

The Cabin by the Lake

Weeks later, they built a small wooden cabin by the lake. It was peaceful — birds sang in the morning, and the reflection of the sky danced on the water.

Daniel loved it. He said it felt like home. But Ethan’s eyes were always on the ground — searching, digging, waiting for the day he’d find that treasure.

One evening, Daniel caught him digging near the old oak tree.

“Ethan, what are you doing?” he asked.

“Just fixing the soil,” Ethan lied, hiding the metal detector behind his back.

Daniel looked at him quietly. “Sometimes I feel like you’re searching for something that doesn’t exist.”

Ethan smiled coldly. “Maybe you just don’t know what’s worth finding.”

The Disappearance

A storm hit Moonlake one night. The rain poured endlessly, and the wind screamed like a warning.

In the morning, only Ethan returned to town. His clothes were wet, his hands trembling.

“Daniel’s gone,” he told the police. “He slipped while fixing the boat. I tried to save him, but the current took him away.”

The police searched the lake for days but never found Daniel’s body.

The case was closed as an accident — but many people whispered otherwise. Some said Ethan’s story didn’t add up. Others claimed they had seen the two arguing the night before.

Still, without proof, nothing could be done.

Ethan inherited everything — the business, the cabin, and Daniel’s share of the land.

The Haunting

Months passed. Ethan lived alone in the cabin. He tried to enjoy his success, but peace never came.

Every night, he heard faint footsteps near the lake.

Sometimes he’d wake up to see muddy footprints on the porch.

And once — just once — he swore he saw Daniel’s reflection in the water, smiling faintly before vanishing.

He tried to drink away the fear, but guilt has a way of finding cracks in the mind.

Then one evening, while digging again under the oak tree, his shovel hit something hard.

Excited, he dug faster — expecting gold.

But what he unearthed was a wooden box. Inside it lay a small notebook and a photograph of him and Daniel, smiling as teenagers.

The first page of the notebook read:

“If something ever happens to me, it means I trusted the wrong person.”

Ethan froze. The pages that followed described everything — his greed, his lies, and how Daniel had started to suspect him.

The last entry ended with one chilling line:

“If I disappear, don’t believe it was an accident.”

Ethan dropped the book, his breath heavy.

Suddenly, he heard water splashing — footsteps coming closer.

When he turned, there was no one. Only ripples spreading slowly across the lake.

But in the reflection — he saw Daniel standing right behind him.

Ethan screamed.

The Final Mystery

The next morning, a fisherman found the cabin door open and Ethan gone.

His boots were left on the dock, and the soil near the oak tree was freshly dug.

The police searched again but found nothing — no body, no signs of struggle.

Only Daniel’s notebook lay near the lake, now soaked with water.

The case became another unsolved mystery of Moonlake.

Some said Ethan ran away after losing his mind.

Some believed Daniel’s spirit took him.

And a few whispered that the lake keeps secrets — and punishes those who betray friendship.

Years Later

Every few years, locals claim to see two shadows walking along the water’s edge — one tall, one shorter — talking softly, like old friends.

No one knows the truth.

The cabin still stands, untouched, quiet as ever.

But if you go there on a moonlit night and listen closely, you might hear it — two voices whispering across the lake.

“Forgive me.”

“Some things can’t be buried, Ethan.”
