On December 24, 2007, three generations were wiped out in the Carnation Massacre, which took place close to Carnation, Washington, a tiny rural community located 40 kilometers east of Seattle. The killings took place in Wayne Scott and Judy Anderson's house.

Victims Of The Carnation Massacre

Six family members lost their lives on the fateful day.

  • Wayne Scott Anderson, 60, a Boeing engineer and husband of Judy Anderson
  • Judy Anderson, 61, a postal worker, and wife of Wayne Scott Anderson
  • Scott Anderson, 32, son of Wayne and Judy
  • Erica Mantle Anderson, 32, wife of Scott
  • Olivia Anderson, 5, daughter of Scott and Erica
  • Nathan Anderson, 3, son of Scott and Erica

Michele Kristen Anderson who was 29 was the younger sister of Scott Anderson. She claimed her brother owed her money and that her parents and brother had treated her unfairly.

The Day Of The Crime

According to report, on the afternoon of December 24, 2007, Joseph Thomas McEnroe and Michele Kristen Anderson drove their pickup to her parents' house, where Wayne and Judy Anderson lived.

They entered the family house when Judy Anderson was wrapping Christmas presents, McEnroe tried to distract her for Michele to shoot her father. Wayne and Judy Anderson were killed by McEnroe after Michele's rifle jammed.

Six people comprising three generations were wiped out in a gruesome manner

They moved the bodies outside the house, cleaned the house to remove evidence, and carefully waited for other members of the family to come back. Michele Anderson's older brother Scott, his wife Erica, all 32, and their two young children met their untimely deaths at home.

After the family had arrived, Michele Anderson fatally shot her brother. Erica Anderson was also shot. Despite being hurt, she managed to use the cordless phone in the house to call 9-1-1. Dispatchers heard what sounded to them like arguments at a party during the brief connection. Before she could complete her complaint, McEnroe smashed the receiver on the ground after removing the battery.

The Prosecuting Attorney claimed that McEnroe shot 5-year-old Olivia Anderson in the head "at extremely close range." The last surviving resident of the house, 3-year-old Nathan Anderson, was then his next and last target.

Nathan picked up the telephone's batteries that McEnroe had ripped out and held them in his hand before McEnroe then shot him in the head as well.

Anderson didn't want any witnesses and claimed the kids would be traumatized for the rest of their lives after witnessing their parents' deaths.

The gate to the property was shut when police arrived at the area in response to the 9-1-1 call, so they chose not to look any further. Only because Michele Anderson had rushed outside to lock it after realizing Erica's 9-1-1 call went through.

Discovery Of The Bodies

Two days later, on December 26, when Judy's best friend and coworker Linda Thiele visited the house to find out why she was absent from work, the bodies were found. When she spotted bodies on the ground through the window, she dialed 9-1-1. She initially believed she was looking at Wayne and Judy's bodies, but they were actually Scott and Erica's.

Crime-scene reconstructionist Ross Gardner, right, and Senior Deputy Prosecutor Scott O’Toole examine the reconstructed living room where Anderson family members died.

While the detectives were at the property in response to Thiele's 9-1-1 call, McEnroe and Michele Anderson drove up and were brought in for questioning. Eventually, both of them confessed to the killings and were taken into custody.

Anderson is currently being held in the Washington Corrections Center for Women, while McEnroe is incarcerated at the Washington State Penitentiary.
