Locked Door - 8. The Long Road to Recovery [end]

Some Secrets Are Meant to Stay Locked Away

By Moran FushengPublished about a year ago 5 min read

Days had passed since the night of terror, but for Emily, it felt like only moments. The events of that night lingered in her mind like a storm cloud, casting a shadow over everything she did. The campus had returned to its usual rhythm, students going about their daily lives, but for Emily and her friends, nothing felt normal anymore.

Emily sat on a bench outside the student center, watching the world move on around her. The sun was shining, the sky a brilliant blue, and a gentle breeze rustled the leaves in the trees. It was the kind of day that, under different circumstances, she would have found peaceful. But now, it felt like a cruel contrast to the darkness she still carried inside.

Hannah sat beside her, silently staring at the ground. They hadn’t spoken much since the night it all happened. Words seemed inadequate to express the complex emotions they were both feeling—fear, anger, confusion, and a deep sense of loss. The sense of betrayal, the terrifying uncertainty of who could be trusted, still hung heavily between them.

The police had continued their investigation, but answers were slow in coming. They had confirmed that the person they apprehended was indeed suffering from severe mental illness, but the motive behind the night’s events remained murky. The idea that someone else might have been involved haunted Emily, and the knowledge that they might never know the full truth left a gnawing emptiness inside her.

Sarah had been released from the hospital and was physically unharmed, but the trauma of that night had left deep psychological scars. She had withdrawn into herself, rarely speaking, her once bright and lively demeanor now clouded with fear. Emily had visited her several times, trying to offer comfort, but Sarah’s haunted eyes and distant replies made it clear that recovery would be a long and difficult process.

As Emily sat there, lost in thought, she noticed a figure approaching. It was Sarah, walking slowly, her shoulders hunched as if carrying an invisible burden. Emily’s heart ached at the sight of her friend—so changed, so diminished from the vibrant person she had once been.

“Sarah,” Emily called out softly, standing up to meet her.

Sarah looked up, her expression weary, but she managed a small, hesitant smile. “Hi, Emily… Hannah.”

Hannah stood as well, offering Sarah a gentle smile. “Hey, Sarah. How are you feeling today?”

Sarah shrugged, her eyes downcast. “I’m… okay, I guess. Just… trying to make sense of everything.”

Emily exchanged a glance with Hannah before speaking. “Do you want to sit with us? We were just talking about… well, about everything.”

Sarah nodded and slowly sat down on the bench. The three of them sat in silence for a few moments, the weight of the conversation they all knew was coming pressing down on them.

Finally, it was Sarah who broke the silence, her voice trembling. “I’ve been having nightmares… about that night. I keep hearing voices, seeing shadows… I can’t shake the feeling that someone’s still out there, watching me.”

Emily reached out and took Sarah’s hand, squeezing it gently. “You’re safe now, Sarah. The police are still investigating, but they’re doing everything they can to make sure nothing like this ever happens again.”

Sarah nodded, but the fear in her eyes didn’t dissipate. “I know… but it’s hard to believe it’s really over. I keep thinking about that person, the one who unlocked your door, the one who… who tried to get into my room. I keep wondering why. Why did they do it? What did they want?”

Emily sighed, her own frustration bubbling to the surface. “I don’t know, Sarah. I wish I had answers, but all we have are more questions. The police are trying to piece it together, but… it’s like there’s a piece of the puzzle missing.”

Hannah, who had been quiet until now, spoke up, her voice firm. “We can’t let this control our lives. I know it’s hard—I’m struggling with it too—but we have to try to move forward. We have to believe that we’ll be okay, that we’ll heal.”

Sarah looked at Hannah, her eyes filling with tears. “But how? How do we move on from something like this?”

Hannah’s expression softened, and she placed a hand on Sarah’s shoulder. “One day at a time. We lean on each other, and we take it one day at a time. It won’t be easy, and it won’t be quick, but we can get through this together.”

Emily nodded in agreement. “Hannah’s right. We have to support each other, just like we did that night. We made it through that, and we’ll make it through this too.”

Sarah wiped away her tears, a small, grateful smile tugging at her lips. “I’m so glad I have you both. I don’t know what I would have done without you.”

The three of them sat in silence for a while, the warmth of their friendship offering a small measure of comfort in the midst of their pain. The campus around them was alive with activity, students laughing, chatting, going about their lives. For a moment, Emily allowed herself to feel a glimmer of hope that maybe, just maybe, they could find a way back to that kind of normalcy.

But as the sun continued to climb in the sky, casting long shadows across the ground, Emily knew that the road to recovery would be long and fraught with challenges. The scars left by that night would take time to heal, and some might never fully fade. The fear, the uncertainty, the knowledge that something so terrifying could happen so close to home—it was something that would stay with them forever.

As they sat there, Emily felt a sense of resolve settle over her. She couldn’t change what had happened, couldn’t undo the fear and pain they had all experienced. But she could choose how to move forward, how to rebuild her life in the aftermath.

And she knew that she wouldn’t have to do it alone.

“Let’s make a promise,” Emily said suddenly, her voice steady despite the emotion in her heart. “Let’s promise to be there for each other, no matter what. We’ve been through something horrible, but we survived. And we’ll keep surviving, as long as we stick together.”

Hannah and Sarah both nodded, their eyes filled with a mixture of sadness and determination.

“We promise,” Hannah said, her voice strong.

Sarah smiled, her tears now replaced with a flicker of hope. “We promise.”

The three friends sat together on the bench, the bonds between them strengthened by the ordeal they had faced. The future was uncertain, the road ahead filled with challenges, but they had each other. And in that, Emily found the strength to keep going.

The nightmare might have left its mark, but it hadn’t broken them. They were survivors, and together, they would find a way to heal.

As the sun climbed higher in the sky, bathing the campus in light, Emily felt a small but powerful sense of peace. The darkness might return, the shadows might linger, but they would face it together.

And in the end, that was enough.
