I Might Come Back in a Coffin”: The Chilling Last Words of Sam Abraham
Pray that I return alive, because next time I might come back in a coffin
Sam Abraham’s final words before boarding his flight back to Australia sent a shiver down his father’s spine:
“Pray that I return alive, because next time I might come back in a coffin.”
No one thought much of it at the time. It sounded like a passing remark — maybe a joke, maybe a premonition. But just days later, his haunting words would turn into a brutal reality that shattered his family and stunned a quiet community across continents.
A Peaceful Life, A Sudden End
At 35, Sam Abraham had built the kind of life many dream of. Originally from Kerala, India, he lived peacefully in Epping, Australia, with his wife Sophia and their 7-year-old son. The couple had been childhood friends, neighbors, and eventually lovers. They’d overcome family resistance and long-distance struggles to build a life together abroad. Every year, they made it a point to return to Kerala, to reconnect with their roots.
In October 2015, their two-week family visit came to an end. On October 12th, they said their goodbyes and flew back to Australia. What awaited them there was far from normal.
The night they returned, everything seemed fine. They had dinner and went to bed. But the next morning, Sophia found Sam unresponsive. At first, she assumed he was just tired. Then panic set in. Neighbors were called. An ambulance arrived. But nothing could be done — Sam was declared dead.
A healthy young man dying suddenly in his sleep? The verdict: a heart attack Or so everyone thought.
Grief… or Performance?
Sam’s body was flown back to Kerala. On October 18th, he was buried behind his childhood home — just as he had eerily requested before his death. His wife stayed for five days, mourning and weeping alongside the family. Then, citing work, she returned to Australia with their son.
Sophia seemed broken — a devastated widow. Every Saturday, she called Sam’s parents. Life, it seemed, was moving on.
But grief has a way of exposing the truth — especially when it’s faked.
A Dangerous Love Triangle
Unbeknownst to Sam, the woman he loved had been harboring a dark secret. Before they married, Sophia had fallen in love with another man — Arun Kamasunanan — during her college years in Kerala. Even after marrying Sam, her heart, and later her actions, remained tied to Arun.
When Sophia moved to Australia for a job, Arun was already there. What began as a rekindling of an old flame quickly spiraled into something more sinister.
Sam had relocated from Oman to Australia to be closer to his wife and son — but to Sophia, his presence was an obstacle. Her diary entries, later submitted as court evidence, revealed inner turmoil and resentment. She and Arun wanted to be “one.” Sam was in their way.
They began plotting.
The Perfect Murder?
On October 14th, just two days after returning to Australia, Sophia handed Sam an avocado milkshake laced with sleeping pills. When he passed out, Arun — who had been hiding inside the house — emerged.
Together, they mixed cyanide into orange juice and poured it into Sam’s mouth.
He convulsed. Foam began leaking from his lips. Within minutes, Sam Abraham — son, husband, father — was dead.
That night, Sophia slept next to his body. The next morning, she began her act: tears, panic, and phone calls to neighbors.
To the world, she was a grieving wife. But one officer wasn’t convinced.
The Trap
Months passed. Police quietly launched a full surveillance operation. Sophia’s movements, bank records, and phone calls were tracked. It was then that they uncovered shocking clues: she had transferred Sam’s car to Arun, opened a joint bank account, and moved all of Sam’s money into it.
One officer took it a step further. Noticing Arun’s frequent visits to a local bar, he posed as a regular customer. They struck up a friendship. Arun, unaware he was speaking to a cop, eventually got drunk and careless — and confessed.
With access to Arun’s phone and months of surveillance data, police had enough to act. They requested Sam’s body be exhumed.
The autopsy report revealed the truth: high levels of cyanide and sedatives.
It was murder.
The Verdict
During interrogation, both Sophia and Arun confessed. The courtroom was stunned. The judge sentenced Arun to 27 years in prison without parole and Sophia to 22 years without parole.
When Sophia begged for leniency, citing her son, the judge’s reply was ice cold:
“It’s better for the child that you’re not with him.”
Though Sophia’s sister initially received custody, Sam’s parents fought — and won — custody of their grandson.
A Life Stolen, A Truth Unearthed
What began as a tragic death soon unraveled into a tale of betrayal, manipulation, and cold-blooded murder. Sam Abraham’s chilling final words were not a coincidence. They were the echoes of a man who somehow sensed the danger lurking behind the eyes of the one he trusted most.
The truth took time. But like all dark secrets, it eventually clawed its way to the surface.
And with it came justice.
