How we're already getting the Charlie Kirk situation wrong

from a middle of the political road woman

I really do not care if you liked or agreed with Charlie Kirk, we still need to talk about what happened. We're already getting this wrong. Note: at the time I started to write this it was days after it happened.

To his family I am so sorry you're going this- it is a terrible thing to lose someone you love. We are all thinking and praying for y'all. Please seek counseling if needed, there's no shame in asking for help.

To the witnesses I'm sorry for what you had to experience. Talk about what you are feeling to someone. I'm sure you are going through a lot and having a lot of horrible feelings.

Let's start from the beginning. Why am I writing this? I think we have a duty to treat things and speak about things in a way to do what is best for humanity as a whole. Speaking and treating this the wrong way could cause division and other horrible issues like copycats. Also, the way that people talk about this or any horrific action could tell the younger generation that this how to handle disagreements. It will shape the way the younger generation sees the world.

Who was Charlie Kirk? He was an American right-wing political activist, author, and media personality. He co-founded the conservative organization Turning Point USA (TPUSA) in 2012 and was its executive director. Look him up on YouTube, they have full debates that he did. He would go to colleges and do events that were kind of mini debates with several people.

What happened? During one of his events, he was engaging with a young person asking a question about shootings when he was shot. He was taken to the Timpanogos Regional Hospital in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead later that afternoon.

How and why are we getting it wrong already? It depends on the side of the political spectrum you are on. Now I do realize that there are people on both sides of the spectrum who could do any of these. I'm just saying that there are reactions that mostly liberals are doing and visa versa.

I have seen a few liberals saying horrible things. I've even seen people say that he deserved it or that they're glad that he's dead. I can't believe that I'm explain why this is wrong but here it goes. Being glad someone is dead makes you a crappy person. It tells me that you're ok with murder. It scares that people not only feel this way but are comfortable enough to say it online for anyone to see. You may as well have pulled the trigger yourself. People have gotten fired over their words. We have freedom of speech not freedom of consequences.

The liberals were also blaming the victim for his murder. They said that his words brought this on. We have the freedom of speech; you may not like what people have to say but they still have the right to say it. Noone has their death coming because of what they believe or what they said.

There are liberals who have not shared this viewpoint. They get we shouldn't be saying awful things about people just because we don't agree with them.

Now to the conservatives. I have not seen them say awful things about him. They have already made him a martyr. I don't think this was religious, I think it was political. It was also said that it was about hate speech.

The thing that annoyed me about the conservative side was they posted a picture/ meme that featured pictures of Abe Lincoln, JFK, MLK, Charlie Kirk and Jesus with the words "all because of words". Jesus' death was about salvation and prophecy. Plus, it's blasphemy to compare Charlie to Jesus. Abe Lincoln was murdered because John Booth wanted to "avenge the South" after the civil war. John also didn't want slaves to vote which was something that Abe was trying to make a reality. We don't know why JFK was shot. MLK was shot because he was trying to start a change with speeches and marches (with other protest).

So to say all of these men were killed for words is ridiculous! Charlie is the only one who was killed just because of his words. MLK was the only one that you can maybe say was killed for his words.

Conservatives were also calling this demonic. I think it was more evil than demonic. According to google demonic actions are things you do under the influence or while possessed by a demon. Evil actions are more diverse in their influence. I think one reason that it's important not to call this demonic is because it could lead to satanic panic. Satanic panic is the widespread fear that the devil is at work in a situation.

While I think the devil could influence someone to do this, I think that it has more to do with mental health issues. It could also be the whole people don't like opinions that don't sound like theirs. Crazy people do stuff that seems demonic but it's just crazy or evil.

Then the conservatives were trying to focus on the trans partner angle which is the wrong angle to focus on. Not everyone who is trans or has a trans partner will do this. Also, what does someone's partner have to do with their crime?

What we need to do is stick to the facts and get the facts straight with all news stories, especially crime. The facts are so important, lies will divide us faster than anything.
