In 1991, after one of his victims managed to escape, police raided his Wisconsin apartment and found him. Authorities entered and found one of the most horrific crime scenes in American history.

After picking up 18-year-old Steven Hicks, who was hitchhiking, Dahmer committed his first murder there in 1978. Hicks was persuaded to accompany Dahmer when he drove to his parents' house in Bath Township, Ohio. After a while of drinking, Hicks declared he wanted to leave. According to his biography, Dahmer beat Hicks with a barbell and strangled him before later telling police he didn't want him to leave.

Police stopped Dahmer that same night on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, but they didn't know that Hicks' body parts were inside his car, wrapped in plastic bags. Instead, they let him go. According to The New York Times, Dahmer later crushed and dispersed Hicks' bones. How do you defend your kids against predators? He killed his second victim in the 1980s, but he claimed to have found Steve Tuomi dead when he awoke after drinking.

Dahmer insisted he couldn't recall what had happened. Soon after, he killed two more people and kept them at his grandmother's home in West Allis, Wisconsin, along with Tuomi. Before burying Tuomi, Dahmer allegedly dismembered him and masturbated over his remains. He acknowledged masturbating over Hicks' remains as well. Eventually, as the number of victims increased, Dahmer was driven to cannibalism by his dark desires. Additionally, he started experimenting with cruel forms of torture, like drilling victims while they were still alive.

Dahmer told Inside Edition in 1993, "I was branching out; that's when the cannibalism started, eating of the heart and the arm muscle." "By doing it, they gave me the impression that they were a part of me. It began as simple curiosity before progressing to compulsive behaviour. Dahmer acknowledged preserving human remains and freezing body parts for later consumption. To dismember his victims, he used a saw, hammers, knives, and other implements. According to Inside Edition, Dahmer claimed,

"I had these obsessive desires that I wanted to control and possess permanently." I started keeping body parts like skulls and skeletons as my obsession grew. Police were called to Dahmer's apartment at least twice prior to discovering human remains there. According to the New York Times, Dahmer persuaded officers each time that everything was fine, including a rumoured relationship with a half-naked, inebriated 14-year-old boy inside his apartment. Dahmer was successful in persuading the officers that the boy was okay and that they were merely arguing.

Dahmer killed the boy by injecting hydrochloric acid into his brain after the police had left. The police entered Dahmer's apartment while wearing protective gear and oxygen masks the second and last time they arrived at the scene. The remains of 11 victims were discovered inside Dahmer's Milwaukee apartment at 213 Twenty-Fifth Street. Numerous boxes of bones, a man's genitalia, lungs, and intestines in a freezer, five skulls and skeletons, and a human heart that Dahmer admitted he intended to consume were among the body parts discovered. Eventually, Dahmer begged.

Dahmer admitted to the 15 murders but said he was insane. He was given 16 life sentences in 1994 after being declared sane. He was transported to Portage, Wisconsin's Columbia Correctional Institution. In November 1994, while Dahmer was on a work assignment at the facility, Christopher Scarver attacked him and killed him by hitting him with a metal bar. "Because I was so abhorrently repulsed, I asked him if he did those things. He felt astounded.

Scarver reportedly told the New York Post, "Yes, he was. He quickly began looking for the door. I obstructed him. He died in the end. I lowered his head. Later, according to Scarver, Dahmer made no sounds while being struck. Named Victims Subscribe to the "Crime Stories with Nancy Grace" podcast for the most recent true crime and justice news.
