The town of Circleville in Ohio was terrorized for nearly two decades by an anonymous letter writer. This anonymous writer used to send threatening letters that exposed alleged secrets about neighbours and friends. This mystery had intrigued many TV shows and even podcasters.
" Something pretty disturbing happened in Circleville , starting small and flourishing over decades ... Residents .... began to receive letters that accused the citizens of being involved in pretty terrible things such as embezzlement , domestic affairs , violence , affairs , and even murder."
It almost felt like this Circleville letter writer knew everything about everyone and knew everyone's secret .
These letters were vicious and ugly. Anyone could guess that this letter came from a person with severe phycological problems.
Hundreds of these threatening and anonymous letter kept on coming. Most of these letters had a postmark from Columbus and Ohio.
Even just a walk to the mailbox could trigger terror and this exactly to woman who lived there by the name of Mary Gillispie , she was a school bus driver.
When Mary Gillispie goes to her mailbox , she would receive an unanimous letter . She opened the letter and it stated that she should end her affair with the superintendent of the school there, Gordon Massie. This letter had an distinct handwriting.
The exact content of the letter stated " Mrs Gillispie , stay away from Massie. I've been observing your house and I know you have children."
All of the letters practically said the same thing that Gordan Massie should be exposed. Basically the superintendent should be exposed and fired.
Things even got worst when her husband Ron Gillispie also started receiving anonymous letters.
The letter stated that " Mrs Gillispie , your wife is seeing Gordan Massie . You should catch them and kill them both. He doesn't deserve to live "
He got many letters stating that if he don't do something about the affair his life would be in danger.
He got another stating that " We know what kind of car you drive , we know where your kids go to school."
Thing even escalated further on August 1977 . One night Ron Gillispie would get a call late at night. He would be so enraged that he picks up a gun and would get into his truck and drive off.
He had told his daughter that he was going to confront the anonymous writer from these letters. He was traveling at a high speed , he had lost control of his truck , went off the road, hit a tree and he was killed.
Many treats were made by the anonymous writer to Ron Gillispie. The letter writer made many treats so that Ron Gillispie could end up dead and he did end up dead.
The main question arises " Was Ron Gillespie's death an accident or was he murdered ? "
This case really left a mark as it had destroyed many people's lives. Even after 4 decades later , debate over the identity of the writer continuous.
Circleville , Ohio was a Midwestern town. It was very peaceful to live until all this stuff started to happen.
This anonymous author was obsessed on exposing every ugly little secret in Circleville.
Many theories have been speculated over the years and the one common was that there was small town intrigue , seemingly omnipresent villain extracting revenge on the people of Circleville by uncovering their secrets.
There has been a fierce debate to who that villain is or was. The letter's writer still remains unknown to this day.
