The Story

A 40-something year old man from Gboko, Benue State named Terhemen Anongo earlier last year (March 2021) removed his FIRST testicle. By Himself!

At the time, when asked about the decision to do so, Terhemen said and I quote:

You know how the issue of sexual urge torments one when you don’t have a wife, coupled with your religious beliefs. I am someone deeply involved in religion and I read about Origen Adamantius, one of the early church leaders from Egypt, who paid to be castrated so that he would not be bothered by sexual urge. It was in an attempt to do the same thing that I removed my right testicle but there was a heavy flow of blood, so I abandoned it (castration) and rushed to hospital.

Even reading his words, I still cannot believe it! But there is more.

Will you believe that even after the scare Terhemen got from removing the first testicle, he still went ahead this year to remove his OTHER testicle?! Once again, by HIMSELF.

Terhemen said about removing this second one:

I removed it on Monday. The first one had little hitches but this one, having learnt from that experience, I did (remove) it very well. Somebody is always coming to dress it for me. I’m fine; there is no problem; I’m only waiting for when the wound will be healed so I can remove the stitches.

I am actually speechless. I actually have no words to say! I still have so many questions so I did more digging. Upon investigation, I found that:

  • Terhemen is actually 44 years old.
  • He suffered from depression which led him into dropping out of the University of Ibadan in 500 Level where he was studying medicine.
  • He now works as a porter pushing wheelbarrows.

Still, what I really want to know is:

Why On Earth Did He Remove His Testicles By Himself?

I did my research and it turns out that the reason Terhemen did his own castration himself is because:

Prior to taking out the first testicle, Terhemen had gone to three doctors to help him do a safe procedure but all three of them declined. So, because of his medical background from his university days, he had the confidence to attempt the surgery by himself, and so he did. Speaking about it, Terhemen said:

I got the local equipment to do it with stitches, antibiotics as well as other things. But in the process of removing the testicle, there was too much blood, so I had to terminate the surgery.

He spent two weeks in the hospital recovering.

So? Did Removing The Testicles Clear His Sexual Thoughts?

According to Terhemen after he removed his first testicle, he said:

It is an ongoing trouble, starving (abstaining from sex) yourself is not easy; you get some energy to overcome and then some women around here (in Gboko) are almost walking naked, you know what I mean. So, I said to myself “Why not take away the ‘petrol tank’? Even now that I have removed one testicle, the temptation still goes on (laughs). Now that I have removed one testicle, the sexual urge has escalated (laughs).

Escalated?

Interesting! So after removing one testicle, the sexual urges escalated? Wow! I have gone to do some research and the literature actually supports this. According to The International Society for Sexual Medicine (ISSM):

If only one testicle is removed, sexual function usually isn’t affected. The testicle that remains usually produces enough testosterone and sperm so that a man can preserve his sexual function and his fertility.

If both testicles are removed, the situation is different. Without both testicles, a man’s body is unable to produce testosterone. Amongst other general symptoms, he might become less interested in sex and might experience erection difficulties.

Wow, I did not know that! Very interesting stuff. This is something I never thought I'll be Googling or researching about but because of Terhemen, here we are talking about it.

This story BLOWS. MY. MIND. in more ways than I can even put into words or gifs, but I am wayyy more excited about hearing what YOU think about this story. Please let me know your thoughts about this by leaving a comment on my Facebook post. I really cannot wait to see what you think.
